What is Wanship's History?
Wanship was started in 1859 by two people named Stephen Nixon and Henry Roper. Other settlers joined them over the next two years. In 1861, about 300 Native Americans also moved into the area.
How Wanship Got Its Name
With so many people, finding enough food became hard. A friendly leader from the Ute tribe, named Chief Wanship, helped the new settlers. He showed them where to find wild animals and edible plants. He also helped them trade with the Native Americans. Because of his help, the town was named after him.
Early Life and Trade
People in Wanship grew crops like rye, barley, wheat, and alfalfa. The town was also a busy place for trade. Important goods passed through Wanship, including coal from Coalville, silver from Park City, and lumber from Kamas.
In 1862, a stop for stagecoaches opened in Wanship. It was called the Kimballs Stage Station. Because of its central location, Wanship became the first county seat for Summit County in 1866. This means it was the main town where the county government was located. However, in 1872, Coalville became the new county seat.
A Special Home in Wanship
The very first two-story house built in Summit County was in Wanship. It was built by Thomas Albert Smith. This historic house has since been moved to Pioneer Village at Lagoon Amusement Park.
Wanship Today
Today, Wanship is still a small community. It is an unincorporated area, meaning it doesn't have its own city government. You can find a few businesses there, like a filling station (gas station).
There is also a museum located in an old barn. This museum has a collection of old carriages and other items from the American West. South of Wanship, the Wanship Dam was built in the mid-1950s. This dam created the Rockport Reservoir.
Where is Wanship Located?
Wanship is found where two major roads meet: Interstate 80 and Utah State Route 32. It is also located where Silver Creek joins the Weber River. Wanship is about 37 miles (60 km) from Salt Lake City. It is also about 8 miles (13 km) from Coalville.
