Wapiti is a small, special place in Park County, Wyoming, United States. It's not a big city, but a community where people live without a formal city government. Wapiti is nestled in the beautiful Shoshone National Forest, right next to the North Fork of the Shoshone River. It's located between the town of Cody and the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, making it a great spot for nature lovers!

The name "Wapiti" comes from the Cree Indian word for elk. Interestingly, the name "wapiti" is also used for the elk that were brought to New Zealand by President Roosevelt in 1905.

Wapiti Ranger Station

One important place is the Wapiti Ranger Station. This station is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very important historical site recognized by the country. It helps protect the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.

Smith Mansion

You can also find the Smith Mansion in Wapiti. This is a very unique building created by an engineer named Francis Lee Smith. He built the house by hand, starting with the first floor. He lived there and kept adding new floors, rooms, and features for 12 years! It's a bit like the famous Winchester Mystery House because it just kept growing. Construction on the mansion stopped in 1992 when Smith passed away.
