Washburn is a city in North Dakota, a state in the United States. It's located in McLean County, right by the Missouri River. Washburn is special because it's the main town, or county seat, for McLean County. In 2020, about 1,300 people lived there.

The city of Washburn started in 1882. It was built near where Fort Mandan used to be. This fort was where the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition stayed during the winter of 1804–1805. It was also close to a village of the Mandan people. Washburn became the county seat in 1883. The city got its name from a person called General Cadwallader C. Washburn.

Today, Washburn is home to the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. This center teaches visitors all about the Lewis and Clark Expedition's winter stay near the Mandan village. You can even see a full-size copy of Fort Mandan there, which was the base built by the explorers. They also have a replica of one of the expedition's canoes.
