History of Watkins
The city of Watkins has a history stretching back to the late 1800s. A post office, where people send and receive mail, first opened in Watkins in 1887. The city was given its name by officials from the railroad company.
Where is Watkins?
Watkins is located in the northeastern part of Meeker County. It is about 1 mile south and west of the Stearns County border. Minnesota State Highway 55 runs through the southern part of the city. This highway connects Watkins to nearby towns. If you go east on Highway 55 for about 5 miles, you'll reach Kimball. Going west for 7 miles takes you to Eden Valley. Litchfield, which is the main city of Meeker County, is about 16 miles to the southwest.

Watkins covers a total area of about 0.69 square miles (1.78 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The city is located at the very beginning of the Clearwater River. This river flows southeast, then northeast, until it reaches the mighty Mississippi River near the city of Clearwater.
