Wesermarsch is a special area in northwestern Lower Saxony, Germany. It's called a Kreis, which is like a county or district. Wesermarsch has many neighbors! To its east, you'll find the districts of Cuxhaven and Osterholz. The big city of Bremen is also nearby. Other neighbors include Delmenhorst, the district of Oldenburg, and the city of Oldenburg. Finally, to the west, it borders Ammerland and Friesland.

Exploring Wesermarsch: Where Is It?
Wesermarsch is right on the western side of the Weser River. This river flows between the city of Bremen and where it meets the sea. Many smaller rivers flow across Wesermarsch from west to east. The biggest of these is the Hunte River. It flows through the city of Oldenburg before reaching Wesermarsch.
In the northern part of the district, the Weser River meets the sea. This area, along with the Jade Bight (a large bay from the North Sea), surrounds the Butjadingen peninsula. A peninsula is land almost completely surrounded by water. The biggest town in Wesermarsch, Nordenham, is located here. It sits across the Weser River from Bremerhaven.
A Look Back: The History of Wesermarsch
The district of Wesermarsch was officially created in 1933. This happened when several smaller areas, called Ämter, were joined together. These Ämter were Butjadingen, Brake, and Elsfleth. Parts of the Ämter of Delmenhorst and Varel were also added to form the new district.
Friends Around the World: Wesermarsch's Partnerships
Wesermarsch has made friends with other regions, both in Germany and in other countries. Since February 1991, it has had a partnership with two other German districts: Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia and Ludwigslust in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
For many years, Wesermarsch has also been partners with the English area of Havant. In 1989, a partnership was also started with the city of Voronezh in Russia. These partnerships help different regions learn from each other and build friendships.
Understanding the Wesermarsch Coat of Arms
The coat of arms is like a special symbol for Wesermarsch. It tells a story about the district.
- The left side of the shield has red and yellow stripes. These stripes are from the old state of Oldenburg.
- In the bottom right, you can see a warrior. This warrior represents the Frisian tribes. They were the first people to live in this area a long time ago.
- The ship in the top right is a special kind of boat called a cog. Cogs were common trading ships in this area during the Middle Ages. This ship shows that people in Wesermarsch have a long history of trading along the Weser River.
