History of West Bloomfield

This area was once the home of the Seneca Nation. People believe that three Seneca villages were located here. Even today, when farmers plow their fields, they often find old arrowheads and other items.

The first Europeans to visit this land were members of the Jesuits. They came in the 1600s during their travels west.

People started settling here around 1789. The Town of West Bloomfield was officially created in 1833. It was formed from a part of the Town of Bloomfield.

The West Bloomfield Congregational Church started in 1799. Its members first met on a hill. Later, in 1806, a church building was put on that hill. The current building was built in 1875.

The town was home to the Batavia Branch Rail Line. People also called it the "Peanut Line". This railroad brought a lot of business to the town for nearly 100 years. It was built in 1853. The line connected Batavia and Canandaigua. It had stops in West Bloomfield and its small community of Ionia.

There was also a bridge built over what is now NY-64. This bridge was on the eastern side of town. The railroad offered daily trips for both goods and people. It helped the town grow a lot. But in 1939, the train service stopped. More people were using cars, and the railroad was not making enough money.

Two important buildings in West Bloomfield are on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Ontario and Livingston Mutual Insurance Office and the John and Mary Dickson House.
