A Look Back: East Bloomfield's History

East Bloomfield has a long and interesting history. It was once home to Native American tribes and later became a place where new settlers built their homes.

Early Inhabitants and Land Deals

Long ago, this area was the land of the Iroquois confederacy, a group of powerful Native American nations. One of their villages, called Ganondagan, was destroyed in 1687. This happened during a campaign against the Seneca tribe. Today, the Ganondagan State Historic Site is a special place where you can learn about this history. It used to be part of Bloomfield but is now in the town of Victor.

The land that became East Bloomfield was part of a large land sale known as the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. This was a big deal that helped open up western New York for settlement.

How the Town Got Its Name

The town was first created in 1789, the same year as the county. It was simply called "Bloomfield." But later, in 1833, another town called West Bloomfield was created. To avoid confusion, the original town's name was changed to "East Bloomfield."

Over the years, parts of East Bloomfield were used to form other towns. In 1812, the towns of Victor and Mendon were created from parts of East Bloomfield. Mendon is now in Monroe County.
