West Horndon is a friendly village and a local area (called a civil parish) in the south of Essex, England. It's about 20 miles (32 km) east of Central London. In 2021, about 1,650 people lived here.
West Horndon is mostly a countryside area. It has some homes and small businesses. The civil parish also includes the village of East Horndon. A new "garden village" with 3,700 homes is planned for Dunton Hills, which is also part of the parish. West Horndon Parish Council helps run the local area.

History of West Horndon
How West Horndon Grew
In 1930, three houses were built for farm workers. Only one of these original homes still stands today. More houses were built in the 1950s. The village population was 147 people in 1931.
West Horndon started to grow more when a company called Rotary Hoes opened in 1938. They made machines for digging trenches. Many people moved to the village to work there. In the 1950s, more houses were built for these workers and for people who traveled to London for their jobs. Rotary Hoes moved away in 1975 and later closed down.
Local Government
The local government for West Horndon is the West Horndon Parish Council. This council existed before, from 1894 to 1934. The civil parish was officially created again in 2003. This happened after local people asked for it in 2002.
West Horndon is part of the Herongate, Ingrave and West Horndon ward. This is how people vote for their representatives on the Brentwood Borough Council.
Geography of the Area
West Horndon is located about 20 miles (32 km) east-northeast of Charing Cross in Central London.
The parish includes the areas of East Horndon, Dunton Hills, and West Horndon village. It's mostly a rural area with lots of open land. This land is part of the Metropolitan Green Belt, which protects it from too much building.
The main village of West Horndon has streets with suburban houses. There is also a small area for light industrial businesses. To the southeast, you'll find the Dunton Hills golf course. Another active area is Little Warley Hall Lane, with some houses and the Clearview sports centre. East Horndon is a spread-out settlement to the northeast. Part of it is north of the A127 Southend Arterial Road. The entire parish is within the post town of Brentwood.
The southern edge of the parish is next to the London, Tilbury and Southend railway line. The West Horndon railway station is just inside the parish. The western edge is along the Mardyke river. This is where the parish touches the eastern Greater London boundary. The northern edge is partly the Southend Arterial Road. The eastern edge is next to the Borough of Basildon.
Several streams flow down from the hills into the Mar Dyke. This river drains the low-lying fenland out to the Thames river. West Horndon is the first area east of London that isn't continuously built up. There are hills up to 100 meters high, covered in trees and fields.
West Horndon Village
The village is surrounded by open countryside and an industrial estate. Thorndon Avenue is a long, straight road that leads into the heart of West Horndon. Halfway down this road is the junior school with playing fields. Across from the school is the modern church of St Francis.
In the center of the village is a village hall, built around 1961. On the other side of Station Road, which goes through the village, there's a housing estate. The roads here curve and end in cul-de-sacs. The names of these roads are from other places in Essex, like Fyfield Close and Dunmow Gardens. Newer houses are also found near the industrial estate and railway station. The local school is West Horndon Primary School. The village is also in the area for Brentwood County High School.
Dunton Hills Garden Village
In 2017, the government named Dunton Hills a "garden village." This means it's a planned new community with green spaces. In August 2021, plans were submitted to build 3,700 homes in this area. The new village will be more connected to West Horndon village.
In 2022, Dunton Hills was removed from the Metropolitan Green Belt. This allowed for the new development. In November 2023, the council gave permission for the new village to be built. It will have three neighborhoods: Dunton Fanns, Dunton Woods, and Dunton Waters. The site includes old farm buildings, like a Grade II listed farmhouse. This historic building will be part of the new community.
Transport
West Horndon railway station is on the London, Tilbury and Southend main railway line. This line goes from London to Southend. The Railway Hotel, located behind the station, used to be a place where horse-drawn coaches would stop. North of the village, running parallel to the railway, is the A127 Southend Arterial Road. West Horndon is also east of junction 29 of the M25 motorway.
Two bus routes serve the village. Both of these bus routes end in Brentwood.
