Westminster North is an area in London that elects one person to represent it in the House of Commons. This is part of the UK Parliament. The person who represents Westminster North is called a Member of Parliament (MP). Since 2010, the MP for Westminster North has been Karen Buck. She is a member of the Labour Party.
This area was first made into a constituency in 1983. It then stopped being a constituency in 1997. However, it was created again in 2010. Soon, this constituency will change again. After a review in 2023, Westminster North will be split up. Most of it will become part of a new area called Queen's Park and Maida Vale. Other parts will join Cities of London and Westminster and Kensington.

What is Westminster North Like?
This area is in the northwest part of the City of Westminster. It includes some wealthy places like Bayswater and areas near Regent's Park. Historically, people in these areas often voted for the Conservative Party.
You can find famous places here, such as Lord's Cricket Ground and the Abbey Road Studios. Other parts of the constituency include Queen's Park, Church Street, Westbourne Park, and Harrow Road. These areas are a bit further from central London.
Local elections show that some parts, like Little Venice and Regent's Park, often elect Conservative councillors. Other areas, like Maida Vale and Bayswater, have a mix of different party representatives.
How Has Westminster North Changed Over Time?
From 1983 to 1997
The Westminster North constituency was first created in 1983. It was mainly formed from the old Paddington area. It also included parts of the St Marylebone constituency, which was no longer used.
- Who was the MP then?
For its first period, from 1983 to 1997, John Wheeler was the MP for Westminster North. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He won with fairly small majorities. The Paddington area, which was its main part, often had close election results. The St Marylebone area, however, was usually a safe win for the Conservatives.
In 1997, the boundaries of the constituency changed. New areas that tended to vote Labour were added. This made it harder for a Conservative MP to win. John Wheeler decided not to run for election in this new area and retired from politics.
From 2010 to Today
- Who is the MP now?
When the constituency was created again in 2010, many thought the Conservative candidate would win. However, Karen Buck from the Labour Party won the election. She had been the MP for a similar area before. In the 2015 election, her win was one of the closest for the Labour Party. But in the 2017 general election, Karen Buck greatly increased her lead over the Conservative candidate. Her majority grew from 1,977 votes to 11,512 votes.
What are the Boundaries of Westminster North?
The Westminster North constituency includes several local areas called electoral wards. These are:
- Abbey Road; Bayswater; Church Street; Harrow Road; Lancaster Gate; Little Venice; Maida Vale; Queen's Park; Regent's Park; and Westbourne. All of these are within the City of Westminster.
How the Boundaries Have Changed
From 1983 to 1997, the constituency had slightly different wards:
- Bayswater; Church Street; Hamilton Terrace; Harrow Road; Lancaster Gate; Little Venice; Lords; Maida Vale; Queen's Park; Regent's Park; and Westbourne.
For the 2010 general election, the boundaries were changed again. This happened because of a review by the Boundary Commission for England. The new Westminster North constituency was made from parts of two other constituencies:
- Most of Regent's Park and Kensington North.
- Northern parts of Cities of London and Westminster.
The population in some areas had grown. This included Maida Vale, West Kilburn, and St John's Wood, which stayed in the constituency. Other areas like Notting Hill and North Kensington were removed.
