A Look at Whiteside's Past

Early European Settlement

The story of European settlement in Whiteside began in 1843. Captain Francis Henry Griffin, often called Frank, was the first free settler to live on the land. His brothers, John and William, joined him soon after. In 1845, their parents, Jane and Gearbe Griffin, also arrived. Gearbe was in charge of the property.

The Griffin family started a large farm called Whiteside. It covered a huge area of about 28 square miles. They raised both cattle and sheep there. The farm stretched from the North Pine River all the way to the sea coast in the east. It went west to Terror's Creek (now Dayboro) and north towards the Caboolture River.

Challenges and Conflicts

During the early years of settlement, there were difficult times and conflicts. In 1847, there were reports of problems between the settlers and the local Aboriginal people. These issues sometimes led to violence. For example, some workers at a saw-pit were attacked in September 1847.

Old stories and records mention that some Aboriginal people died in the area around 1847. It was believed that this happened after they ate food that had been mixed with a harmful substance. This tragic event was said to be linked to earlier conflicts between the settlers and Aboriginal people.

Later, in 1866, a person named Edgar Foreman saw many old bones in the area. He heard that many Aboriginal people had died there from poisoning. These stories show the sad and challenging interactions that occurred during the early days of European settlement in Whiteside.
