Wilberfoss is a lovely village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It's a "civil parish," which means it's a local area with its own small government.
You can find Wilberfoss about 8 miles (13 km) east of York city centre. It is also about 11 miles (18 km) north-west of Market Weighton. The village is located just north of the A1079 main road.
In 2011, a count of people living there, called a census, showed that 1,866 people lived in Wilberfoss parish. This was a small increase from the 1,855 people counted in 2001.

A Look at Wilberfoss's History
Let's travel back in time to 1823. Back then, only 335 people lived in Wilberfoss. Many different jobs kept the village busy. There were fifteen farmers, some of whom owned their land. You would also find three shopkeepers selling goods.
The village had two wheelwrights who made and fixed wheels. There were also two blacksmiths working with metal. Other important jobs included a butcher, a bricklayer, and a corn miller. A baker made fresh bread, and a tailor sewed clothes. There was even a brewer who made drinks for sale.
Wilberfoss had three public houses, or pubs, called the True Briton, Horse Shoes, and Waggon and Horses. Each had its own landlord. A school teacher helped children learn, and there was also a gentleman living in the village.
The Wilberforce Family Connection
A very old and respected family, the Wilberfoss family, lived here for a long time. They were here from the time of the Norman Conquest until 1710. After that, they sold their family home and land.
A famous person named William Wilberforce was a descendant of this family. He was known for his work against slavery. Even after the family sold their estate, they still supported the local church.
Wilberfoss Priory
Long ago, during the time of King Henry II, a special place called Wilberfoss Priory was built. It was a home for Benedictine nuns, who were religious women. Elias de Cotton founded this priory.
Later, King Henry VIII closed many monasteries and priories, including Wilberfoss Priory. At that time, its yearly value was about £26. The priory was located just north of St John's Church. Sadly, nothing of it remains today.
Important Buildings in Wilberfoss
The parish Church of St John the Baptist is a very old and important building. In 1967, it was given a special status as a Grade I listed building. This means it's considered a building of exceptional historical interest. It is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, which is kept by Historic England.
Another important building is the Old Vicarage on Main Street. It was built around the late 1700s and is a Grade II listed building. This means it's also historically important. It's known for its special wooden eaves and curved gables. Villa Farm, also on Main Street, is another notable building in the village.
