Windsor is a small town located in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, in the United States. It's part of the larger area around Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In 2020, about 831 people lived here.

A Look at Windsor's Past

Windsor was first settled by people in 1767. It officially became a town in 1771. The town was named after Windsor, Connecticut. Many of the first settlers came from that area.

Originally, the town was called "Gageborough." This was to honor a British general named Thomas Gage. However, during the American Revolutionary War, General Gage was on the British side. Because of this, the town's name was changed to Windsor.

Windsor is mostly shaped like a rectangle. It sits on the eastern edge of Berkshire County. The town borders Hampshire County.

Windsor is surrounded by several other towns. To the north is Savoy. To the northeast and east is Plainfield. Cummington is to the southeast. Peru and Hinsdale are to the south. Dalton is to the southwest. Finally, Cheshire is to the northwest.

The town is about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Pittsfield. It's also about 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Springfield. Boston is further away, about 120 miles (190 km) to the west-northwest.

Land and Water Features

Windsor is located on a high, flat area in the Berkshire Hills. It is near where the Westfield River begins. This river flows south through the northeastern part of town. It also goes through Windsor State Forest.

One of the small streams that feeds the river flows through a place called the Windsor Jambs. This area has cool rocky waterfalls. The town also has many areas set aside for wildlife. These include the Eugene Moran Wildlife Management Area. Parts of the Chalet, Peru, and Savoy Wildlife Management Areas are also in Windsor.

Roads and Transportation

Windsor is where two main roads meet: Massachusetts Route 9 and Route 8A. These two roads run together for a bit when heading west. Near the northeast part of town, Route 8A touches the border. Here, it is combined with Route 116. There's a small neighborhood around Windsor Pond.

The town does not have its own bus or train service. The closest places to catch a bus or train are in Pittsfield. The Pittsfield Municipal Airport is the nearest small airport. For bigger flights, the town is about the same distance from Albany International Airport and Bradley International Airport.

In 2000, there were 875 people living in Windsor. This made it one of the smaller towns in Berkshire County. There were 328 households, with many being families.

About 35% of households had children under 18 living with them. Most households (67.7%) were married couples. The average household had about 2.67 people.

The population was spread out by age. About 26.6% were under 18 years old. Another 26.6% were between 25 and 44. About 32.2% were between 45 and 64. And 10.3% were 65 or older. The average age in town was 41 years old.

Learning and Schools in Windsor

Windsor is part of the Central Berkshire Regional School District. Students in this district attend Nessacus Regional Middle School for middle grades. For high school, they go to Wahconah Regional High School. Both of these schools are located in the nearby town of Dalton.

If students want to attend a private school, the closest ones are in Pittsfield. For college, Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield is the nearest community college. The closest state college is Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams. The largest state university nearby is the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
