Discovering Wittenberg Mountain

Where is Wittenberg Mountain?

Wittenberg Mountain is located in Ulster County, in the state of New York. It's part of a group of mountains called the Burroughs Range within the larger Catskill Mountains.

You can find Wittenberg Mountain between two other peaks: Cornell Mountain to its southwest and Terrace Mountain to its northeast.

Water and the Mountain

Wittenberg Mountain is important for the water that flows from it. All the rain and snow that falls on the mountain eventually makes its way into Esopus Creek. This creek then flows into the Hudson River, and finally reaches New York Bay.

Water from the northwest and northeast sides of Wittenberg Mountain flows into Woodland Creek, which then joins Esopus Creek. On the southeast side, water goes into Wittenberg Brook, then Maltby Hollow Brook, Bush Kill, and finally Esopus Creek near the Ashokan Reservoir.

Hiking and Exploring

Wittenberg Mountain is located inside the Slide Mountain Wilderness. This is a special protected area within Catskill State Park in New York.

A famous long-distance hiking trail, called the Long Path, crosses the top of Wittenberg Mountain. This trail is about 350 miles long and stretches all the way from New York City to Albany. The section of the Long Path on Wittenberg is part of the Burroughs Range Trail, which also crosses Slide Mountain and Cornell Mountain.
