Zeist Through Time
The town of "Seist" was first written about in the year 838. This was in an old document called a charter. The first settlement was where the Dorpsstraat is today.
In the late 1100s, a church was built there. Its tower is still part of the Reformed Church now. The rest of that church was built much later. Long ago, a part of the Rhine river flowed near the town center.
The Castle of Zeist
Between 1677 and 1686, a grand building called "Slot Zeist" was constructed. It was built on or near the ruins of an older castle. Not much is known about the family who lived in the first castle. Some names found in old records include Godefridus de Seist from the 1100s.
Later, a man named Count Willem Adriaan van Nassau took over the property. He was related to Prince Maurice of Orange. He built Slot Zeist in a fancy Dutch Classicist style. You can still see beautiful paintings by Daniel Marot inside.
The Moravian Community
In 1746, a group called the Evangelische Broedergemeente (also known as the Moravians) came to Zeist. They built many impressive 18th-century houses around two squares for their community. Their main office is still in the town center, next to the palace.
Zeist in Recent History
In the 1800s, Zeist became a popular place for rich people to live. Many came from the city of Utrecht.
A special court was held near Zeist at Camp New Amsterdam. This court dealt with a very important legal case. It used Scots law even though it was in the Netherlands.
