1000 de la Gauchetière is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It gets its name from its address at 1000 De la Gauchetière Street West, right in the heart of Downtown Montreal. This building is the tallest in Montreal, reaching the maximum height allowed by the city, which is the same elevation as Mount Royal. It stands 205 meters (673 feet) tall and has 51 floors. One of the coolest things about the building is its large indoor ice skating rink, which is located in its main hall.

Building History and Design
This amazing building was designed by architects from Lemay & Associates and Dimakopoulos & Associates. It was built in 1992, around the same time as another tall building nearby, 1250 René-Lévesque, which has 47 floors.
The 1000 de la Gauchetière is a great example of Postmodern architecture. This style mixes old and new ideas in its design. You can spot its unique look by its triangular copper roof. It also has four round, copper-covered entrances at the bottom corners of the tower. These entrances were inspired by the Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral nearby. This was a popular trend for Montreal skyscrapers: they would borrow design ideas from the closest church. The round corner caps also look a bit like the half-circle windows of the Marriott Château Champlain hotel next door.
The building was constructed by Pomerleau Inc., which is one of the biggest construction companies in Quebec.
When it was first built, 1000 de la Gauchetière was owned by two companies, Bell Canada and Teleglobe. Later, in 2002, a company called SITQ bought the building. In 2011, ownership was transferred to Ivanhoé Cambridge.
How Tall Is It?
To be exact, 1000 de la Gauchetière is the tallest building in Montreal if you measure it to its roof. While other buildings like 1250 René-Lévesque have a spire and the CIBC Tower has an antenna that go higher, the main parts of those buildings are actually shorter than 1000 de la Gauchetière.
When you look at the city's skyline, 1000 de la Gauchetière might sometimes look shorter from certain angles. This is because it was built on lower ground. This clever placement allowed it to be taller while still following the city's rules about building heights compared to Mount Royal.
The inside of the building has a strong core made of concrete. The rest of the floors are supported by steel. There are 22 elevators to help people move between floors. The way the building's corners are set back allows for many corner offices on each floor.
The building's design is a bit like the Chase Tower in Dallas, Texas, United States. However, 1000 de la Gauchetière has a distinct style at street level. This design choice makes the building feel less overwhelming from up close. These kinds of details are common in Postmodern architecture.
