The year 101 BC was a time long ago, counted using the old Roman calendar. It was a year filled with important events, especially for the powerful Roman Republic.
Major Events of 101 BC
Roman Republic's Big Victory
The Roman Republic was a very strong government in ancient times. In 101 BC, two important Roman leaders, called consuls, led their armies to a huge win. These consuls were Gaius Marius and Manius Aquillius.
They fought against a group of people called the Cimbri. The Cimbri were a powerful tribe from northern Europe. The big battle happened at a place called Campi Raudii, also known as the Battle of Vercellae. The Roman army won, which was a very important moment for Rome.
Changes in Libya
Far away from Rome, in a region known today as Libya, there was a kingdom called Cyrenaica. In 101 BC, a new ruler took over this kingdom. His name was Ptolemy Apion. He inherited the kingdom, meaning he became the ruler after someone else, likely a family member, passed away.
Important People Who Died
- Cleopatra III of Egypt was a queen of Ancient Egypt. She passed away in 101 BC.
- Boiorix was the king of the Cimbri tribe. He was killed during the big battle against the Romans at Vercellae.
