A Look at 1492 Pictures' History
In 1994, Chris Columbus, a successful director, signed a deal with 20th Century Fox. He had already directed popular movies like the first two Home Alone films and Mrs. Doubtfire. This deal led to the creation of 1492 Pictures. Their very first movie was Nine Months. The agreement with 20th Century Fox was later extended in 1997.
In 2009, the company made a three-year deal with CJ Entertainment, a company from Korea. This deal was to help produce their future movies. In February 2011, 1492 Pictures bought the rights to a South Korean comedy film called Hello Ghost. They planned to make their own version of this movie.
Later in August 2011, the company released a movie called The Help. This film was based on a popular book by Kathryn Stockett. In 2012, they partnered with ro*co productions. This partnership aimed to turn documentary films into regular story-based movies. In 2018, 1492 Pictures signed a deal with Netflix. This allowed them to produce movies specifically for the Netflix streaming service.
In June 2023, it was announced that Chris Columbus had changed the company's name. It was renamed 26th Street Pictures a year or two before this announcement.
