26th Street Pictures is an American company that makes movies. It was started in 1994 by Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Michael Barnathan. Back then, it was called 1492 Pictures. The name "1492" was a fun nod to Christopher Columbus, the famous explorer, and his trip to the Americas in that year. The company's logo used to be a big, detailed compass over an ocean scene. A famous composer named Hans Zimmer even created music for the 1492 Pictures logo!
Besides movies directed by Chris Columbus, 26th Street Pictures has also produced films by other talented directors. These include movies like Jingle All the Way, Monkeybone, and Christmas with the Kranks. They also helped make some of the Harry Potter films, the Fantastic Four movies, and the popular Night at the Museum series.
How the Company Started and Grew
Early Days and Big Deals
In 1994, Chris Columbus was already a very successful director. He had directed popular movies like the first two Home Alone films and Mrs. Doubtfire. He signed a special three-year agreement with 20th Century Fox. This agreement led to the creation of his new company, 1492 Pictures.
The very first movie produced by 1492 Pictures was Nine Months. Because of their success, the deal with 20th Century Fox was extended in 1997.
New Partnerships and Name Change
Over the years, 1492 Pictures made deals with other companies. In 2009, they partnered with CJ Entertainment, a company from Korea, to produce films for three years.
In 2011, 1492 Pictures bought the rights to remake a South Korean comedy film called Hello Ghost. That same year, they released The Help, a movie based on a popular book.
In 2012, the company teamed up with ro*co productions. Their goal was to turn real-life documentary films into fictional movies. Later, in 2018, 1492 Pictures signed a deal with Netflix. This partnership meant they would produce movies specifically for Netflix's streaming service.
In June 2023, it was announced that Chris Columbus had changed the company's name. It became 26th Street Pictures about a year or two before that announcement.
