The American Film Institute (AFI) is a special group that doesn't try to make money. It was created in 1967 by the National Endowment for the Arts. This happened after President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a law to support arts and humanities.
AFI helps teach new filmmakers and actors. It also works hard to save old movies and TV shows. These old films could get damaged or lost if no one takes care of them. Even though it's called the "Film" Institute, AFI also cares about television and video.
George Stevens Jr. was the very first leader of AFI. Later, Jean Picker Firstenberg took over in 1980.
Since 1973, AFI has given out special Life Achievement Awards. These awards honor people who have done amazing things in movies.
In 1998, American movies turned 100 years old! To celebrate, AFI started its 100 Years Series. This series made people excited about movie history and helped them learn about famous films and stars.
More recently, AFI opened the AFI Silver theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. It's a place where people can watch movies.
