Amanda Joy Michalka (mee-SHAH-kə; born April 10, 1991), known as AJ Michalka, is an American actress, musician, and singer. She is famous as one half of the music group Aly & AJ with her older sister, Aly Michalka. AJ has acted in movies like The Lovely Bones (2009), Secretariat (2010), and Super 8 (2011). She also starred in the TV show The Goldbergs (2013–2023) and its spin-off Schooled (2019–2020). Many people also know her voice as Catra in the animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018–2020).

Early Life and Beginnings

AJ Michalka was born in Torrance, California. She is the younger sister of actress and musician Aly Michalka. Her dad, Mark, owns a company, and her mom, Carrie, is a musician. AJ lived in Seattle and Milwaukee for a short time when she was little.

She started playing the piano when she was six years old. Later, she learned to play the guitar. AJ began acting at age five, mostly in plays at her church. She was homeschooled for part of her childhood. She also performed in many musical plays at her school in Milwaukee.

AJ Michalka plays several instruments, including acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and piano. She also worked as a model for catalogs when she was younger.

In 2006, AJ made her first appearance on the Disney Channel. She starred in the movie Cow Belles as Courtney Callum, alongside her sister Aly. She also appeared in TV shows like Oliver Beene, Six Feet Under, and General Hospital. AJ and her sister were also in the MTV movie Super Sweet 16: The Movie.

Movies and TV Shows

In 2009, AJ was in the movie The Lovely Bones. It was released to a wider audience in 2010. She also appeared in the 2011 film Super 8, directed by J. J. Abrams.

Her first main role in a movie was in 2013's Grace Unplugged. In this film, she played the main character.

From 2013 to 2023, AJ had a regular role on the ABC comedy show The Goldbergs. She played Lainey Lewis, who was the best friend of Erica Goldberg. Lainey was also Barry Goldberg's girlfriend for a while. In 2015, she became a main cast member for the show's third season. AJ also played Lainey in the spin-off series Schooled, which ran for two seasons.

AJ is also known for her voice acting. She voices the character Stevonnie in the cartoon series Steven Universe. This character is a mix of Steven and his best friend Connie. From 2018 to 2020, she voiced Catra in the animated adventure series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power on Netflix.

In 2014, AJ and her sister filmed a drama movie called Weepah Way for Now. AJ was one of the producers for this film. It was released in 2016 on DVD and streaming services.

In 2024, AJ Michalka competed on The Masked Singer as "Strawberry Shortcake." She made it to the semi-finals and finished in third place.

From 2009 to 2013, AJ and her sister performed as the music duo 78violet. In 2015, they decided to change their group name back to "Aly and AJ." They continue to release music together.
