Aaron Hankinson (born February 7, 1735 – died October 9, 1806) was an important military leader during the American Revolution. He also served as a politician in the New Jersey state government.

Early Life and Family

Aaron Hankinson was born on February 7, 1735, in Matawan, which is in Monmouth County, New Jersey. At that time, New Jersey was still a British colony. His parents were Rachel and Joseph Hankinson.

When Aaron was young, his family moved to a place called Rowland Mills. This area was in Readington Township, in Hunterdon County.

Moving to Sussex County

On February 9, 1764, Aaron Hankinson married Mary Snyder. She was born in 1740. After they got married, they moved to Sussex County. This area was north of what is now the village of Stillwater. Aaron's father bought a large piece of land there. He shared this land with Aaron and his brother, William.

A Leader in the American Revolution

Aaron Hankinson played a big part in the American Revolution. This was the war where the American colonies fought for their freedom from Great Britain.

Joining the Militia

On July 26, 1775, Aaron Hankinson became a captain in the Sussex County Militia. A militia was a group of citizens who trained to be soldiers in case of an emergency. Colonel Ephraim Martin was in charge of this group.

The next year, Aaron was promoted to Colonel. He was sent to Sandy Hook to help protect the New Jersey coast. This area was important because it was near New York Harbor.

Fighting for Freedom

In 1777, Aaron Hankinson's Sussex County Militia fought in the Battle of Brandywine Creek. They also arrived late to the Battle of Germantown, which was near Philadelphia. These were important battles in the war.

Later in the war, Hankinson and his militia were stationed in a region called the Minisink. This area included parts of northwestern New Jersey, northeastern Pennsylvania, and southeastern New York. Their job was to stop attacks from British loyalists and their Native American allies. Loyalists were colonists who stayed loyal to the British king. These groups were led by Captain Joseph Brant.

At the end of the war, Aaron Hankinson was promoted again. He became a Brigadier General. This is a very high rank in the military.

After the War

After the American Revolution ended, Aaron Hankinson continued to serve his community.

Serving in Government

He was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly. This was part of the state government. He served many terms, from 1782 to 1786 and again from 1788 to 1792.

People who knew him described him as a good and kind man. He was a farmer and also an important member of his church.

Later Life and Legacy

Aaron Hankinson died on October 9, 1806. He was 71 years old. He was buried in the churchyard of the Yellow Frame Presbyterian Church. This church is located between Fredon Township and Frelinghuysen Township, New Jersey.

His tombstone has a special message on it. It talks about his life and his faith.

Aaron and his wife Mary had 13 children. One of his descendants was William A. Newell, who later became the Governor of New Jersey.
