Adeline de Monseignat
Adeline de Monseignat, a contemporary artist.

Adeline de Monseignat (born in 1987) is a talented artist from the Netherlands and Monaco. She creates amazing visual art and works in both London and Mexico City. Her art often uses natural materials like recycled fur, soil, textiles, glass, and marble. She makes sculptures and art installations that explore ideas from mythology (old stories), anthropology (the study of humans), and psychology (how the mind works). She's especially interested in the "Uncanny," which means something that is strangely familiar but also a bit unsettling.

Becoming an Artist

Adeline de Monseignat studied Language and Culture at University College London. She also spent a year in Italy studying Architecture and Design. After that, she focused on art, completing a Fine Art Foundation Course at the Slade School of Fine Art. She then earned her Master of Fine Arts degree with high honors from the City and Guilds of London Art School in 2011.

Her art show at the end of her degree was so good that a curator named Justin Hammond chose her for the Catlin Guide. This book highlights forty promising new artists in the United Kingdom. Because of this, she was chosen as a finalist for the Catlin Art Prize in 2012, along with nine other artists. She won the Public Vote Prize for the Catlin Art Prize that year.

In 2012, she was also a finalist for the Threadneedle Prize. The next year, in 2013, she received the Bursary Award from the Royal Society of Sculptors.

Early Exhibitions and Materials

In 2013, a curator named James Putnam brought Adeline de Monseignat and artist Berndnaut Smilde together for her first show at Ronchini Gallery. This exhibition was called The Uncanny.

In 2014, the Ronchini Gallery held a solo exhibition (a show just for her art) called Home. An art historian wrote a special book about her work for this show. That same year, the BBC World Service interviewed her about how she uses recycled fur in her art.

In 2015, Adeline de Monseignat learned stone carving from sculptor Gianpietro Carlesso. Since then, and especially after spending time in Mexico starting in 2017, marble has become a very important material in her art.

Her 2018 solo show, O, at Ronchini Gallery, featured sculptures and her film In The Flesh. She filmed this movie in 2016 in the famous Carrara marble quarries in Italy.

Showing Art in Mexico

In 2018, Adeline de Monseignat showed her art in Mexico for the first time. It was at a gallery called Galería de Arte Mexicano. This gallery is famous because it hosted an international Surrealist exhibition in 1940. Her exhibition, called Synergia, included works by several artists. It was so popular that it later moved to the Museo Federico Silva in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. This is the only museum in Latin America dedicated to sculpture.

In 2020, she had many exhibitions in Mexico. She showed her art at places like Salon Acme, Zona Maco, Museo de Geologia UNAM, Studio Block M74, and Masa Galeria. She exhibited alongside other well-known artists like Jose Davila and Perla Krauze.
