Early Life and Boxing Start
Adrien Broner grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He started boxing when he was just six years old. He has often said that boxing helped him stay out of trouble and gave him a good path in life.
Amateur Boxing Career
Before turning professional, Broner had a very successful amateur career. He competed in 319 fights. Out of these, he won 300 and lost only 19. This impressive record showed his talent and skill from a young age.
Professional Boxing Journey
Super Featherweight Division
Starting His Pro Career
Adrien Broner became a professional boxer on May 31, 2008. He quickly showed his power by winning his first three fights with first-round knockouts. These wins were against Allante Davis, David Warren Huffman, and Ramon Flores. In his fourth fight, he faced Terrance Jett in Las Vegas. Broner won this fight by stopping Jett in the sixth round. His fifth fight in 2008 against Eric Ricker ended in a "no-contest" decision.
In January 2009, Broner had a tougher fight against Jose Alfredo Lugo. He won by a unanimous decision, meaning all judges agreed he won. Three weeks later, he stopped Angel Rodriguez in the fourth round. Broner continued to win, often by knockout, throughout 2009 and 2010. He stopped opponents like Edgar Portillo, Henry White Jr., and Tommy Atencio in the first round.
Big Steps in Super Featherweight
Broner took a big step up in his career on March 5, 2011. He fought former champion Daniel Ponce de León. It was a very close fight, but Broner won by a unanimous decision. Some people thought the decision was controversial because De Leon was very active.
His next fight was against Jason Litzau. Broner won quickly, stopping Litzau in the first round. He landed strong punches that made Litzau fall, and the referee stopped the fight.
Winning a World Title
After trying to get a fight with Ricky Burns, Broner fought Vicente Martin Rodriguez on November 26, 2011. He won this fight by knockout in the third round. This victory earned him the vacant WBO Super Featherweight World title, his first world championship.
Broner successfully defended his WBO title against Eloy Pérez on February 25, 2012. He won by knockout, controlling the fight from the beginning. He landed a strong right hand that sent Perez down.
His next fight was set for July 21, 2012, against Vicente Escobedo. However, Broner weighed too much for the super featherweight limit. Because of this, he lost his title before the fight even started. The fight still happened, and Broner won by TKO in the fifth round when Escobedo's corner stopped the fight.
Lightweight Division
Becoming a Lightweight Champion
Broner's next big fight was on November 17, 2012. This was his first fight in the Lightweight division. He faced the WBC Lightweight champion, Antonio DeMarco. Broner used his quick moves and defense to control the fight. In the eighth round, Broner landed a powerful combination of punches. A left uppercut sent DeMarco to the floor for the first time in his career. DeMarco's team stopped the fight, making Broner a two-weight world champion.
Defending His Lightweight Title
Broner made his first title defense on February 16, 2013, against Gavin Rees. Many people thought this would be an easy win for Broner. He stopped Rees in the fifth round after Rees's corner threw in the towel. Broner landed many strong punches, including a right uppercut that knocked Rees down.
Welterweight Division
Moving Up to Welterweight
After not being able to fight Ricky Burns, Broner decided to move up two weight classes to welterweight. He wanted to fight two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi. The fight was confirmed for June 22, 2013.
In front of a large crowd, Broner defeated Malignaggi by a split decision. This means two judges scored it for Broner, and one for Malignaggi. Broner landed more punches overall. After the fight, Broner showed some respect for Malignaggi, calling him a "world-class fighter."
First Welterweight Loss
In October 2013, it was announced that Broner would defend his welterweight title against Marcos Maidana. The fight took place on December 14, 2013. Maidana started the fight very aggressively, hitting Broner hard. In the second round, Maidana knocked Broner down for the first time in his career. Broner was knocked down again in the eighth round. Maidana continued to dominate, winning the fight by a unanimous decision. This was Broner's first professional loss.
Broner quickly left the ring after the announcement. He later apologized to his fans. Broner wanted a rematch, saying he had a "bad night."
Light Welterweight Division
Returning to the Ring
On May 3, 2014, Broner had his first fight as a light welterweight. He fought Carlos Molina. Broner won the fight by a unanimous decision. He was the more active boxer and landed many jabs. After the fight, Broner said the loss to Maidana had "humbled" him, but he was still "Adrien 'The Problem' Broner."
Another Win at Light Welterweight
Broner stayed in the light welterweight division to fight Emmanuel Taylor on September 6, 2014. The fight took place in Broner's hometown of Cincinnati. Taylor started strong, but Broner increased his activity in the middle rounds. Broner secured the win with a left hook that sent Taylor to the canvas in the final round. Broner won by unanimous decision.
Return to Welterweight
Facing Shawn Porter
On June 20, 2015, Broner fought fellow Ohio boxer and former IBF Welterweight champion Shawn Porter. The fight was at a special weight limit of 144 pounds, requested by Broner. Broner lost the fight by a unanimous decision. Porter controlled most of the fight. In the 11th round, Broner had a point taken away for holding too much. Porter knocked Broner down in the 12th round, but it wasn't enough for Broner to win.
Return to Light Welterweight
Winning a Fourth World Title
After Jessie Vargas left his WBA super lightweight title, Broner decided to move back to the 140-pound division. He wanted to win a fourth world title. On October 3, 2015, he fought Khabib Allakhverdiev for the vacant WBA title. Broner won by TKO in the 12th round. The referee stopped the fight because Broner was landing many punches without Allakhverdiev fighting back.
Defending Against Theophane
On April 1, 2016, Broner was set to defend his WBA super lightweight title against British boxer Ashley Theophane. However, Broner missed the weight limit for the fight. Because of this, only Theophane could win the title. Broner still won the fight by TKO in the ninth round.
Second Return to Welterweight
A Controversial Win
Broner fought Adrían Granados on February 18, 2017. The fight was at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. Broner won by a split decision, which means the judges disagreed, and it was a very close fight. Some people thought Granados should have won. Broner landed more accurate punches.
Second Return to Light Welterweight
Fighting Mikey Garcia
On July 29, 2017, Broner fought WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia. The fight was at a catchweight of 140 pounds. Garcia won the fight by a unanimous decision. Garcia was more active and landed more punches throughout the fight. Broner was humble after the loss, saying Garcia was the "superior fighter."
Draw Against Jessie Vargas
On April 21, 2018, Broner fought former two-weight world champion Jessie Vargas in a 144-pound catchweight bout. The fight ended in a 12-round majority draw, meaning two judges scored it a tie, and one scored it for Broner. Vargas started strong, but Broner took control in the later rounds. Broner believed he won the fight, saying he landed more clean punches.
Third Return to Welterweight
Challenging Manny Pacquiao
On January 19, 2019, Broner faced Manny Pacquiao, a boxing legend. The fight was for the WBA (Regular) welterweight title. Pacquiao won the fight by a unanimous decision. Pacquiao landed more punches and seemed to control the fight. In the seventh and ninth rounds, Pacquiao landed strong combinations that hurt Broner. Despite the clear result, Broner claimed he won the fight in his post-fight interview.
Comeback Fights
Victory After a Long Break
After a 25-month break from boxing, Broner returned to the ring on February 20, 2021. He faced undefeated Jovanie Santiago. Broner won by a unanimous decision, which was his first victory in over four years. The decision was controversial, as some thought Santiago landed more punches, especially in the first half of the fight.
Broner's most recent fight was on June 9, 2023, where he defeated Bill Hutchinson by unanimous decision. His record currently stands at 35 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw.
