Early Life and Boxing Start
Adrien Broner grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He started boxing when he was just six years old. He has often said that boxing helped him stay out of trouble.
Amateur Boxing Career
Before turning professional, Broner had a very successful amateur career. He fought 319 times. He won 300 of those fights and only lost 19.
Professional Boxing Journey
Adrien Broner became a professional boxer on May 31, 2008. He quickly showed his power by winning his first three fights with first-round knockouts.
Super Featherweight Division
Starting Strong
In his early professional fights, Broner continued to impress. He won against Terrance Jett and went on to win many more matches. He often finished his opponents early with knockouts. In 2010, he stopped all four of his opponents.
First Big Challenges
Broner faced his first major test against former champion Daniel Ponce de León in March 2011. It was a very close fight, but Broner won by a unanimous decision.
His next big fight was against Jason Litzau. Broner won quickly, stopping Litzau in the first round. This showed his strong punching power.
Winning a World Title
On November 26, 2011, Broner fought Vicente Martin Rodriguez. He won by knockout in the third round. This victory earned him the vacant WBO Super Featherweight World title.
He successfully defended his title against Eloy Pérez in February 2012. Broner controlled the fight and won by knockout in the fourth round.
Losing the Title
In July 2012, Broner was scheduled to fight Vicente Escobedo. However, Broner weighed too much for the super featherweight limit. Because of this, he was automatically stripped of his title. The fight still happened, and Broner won by TKO in the fifth round.
Lightweight Division
Becoming a Two-Weight Champion
Broner moved up to the lightweight division for his next fight. On November 17, 2012, he challenged WBC Lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco. Broner used his speed and strong punches to dominate the fight. He knocked DeMarco down in the eighth round, and DeMarco's corner stopped the fight. This made Broner a world champion in two different weight classes.
Defending the Lightweight Title
In February 2013, Broner defended his WBC lightweight title against Gavin Rees. Broner was in control for most of the fight. He knocked Rees down in the fourth round and continued to land powerful punches. Rees's corner stopped the fight in the fifth round, giving Broner another win.
Welterweight Division
Moving Up in Weight
After defending his lightweight title, Broner decided to move up two weight classes to welterweight. He fought two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi for the WBA welterweight title on June 22, 2013. Broner won the fight by a split decision. This meant he had won world titles in three different weight classes.
First Professional Loss
In October 2013, Broner defended his welterweight title against Marcos Maidana. This was a tough fight for Broner. Maidana was very aggressive from the start. In the second round, Maidana knocked Broner down for the first time in his career. Maidana continued to pressure Broner throughout the fight. Broner was knocked down again in the eighth round. Maidana won the fight by a unanimous decision, giving Broner his first professional loss.
Broner later said he wanted a rematch. He felt he had a "bad night" and wanted to win his belt back.
Light Welterweight Division
A Strong Comeback
After his loss, Broner moved down to the light welterweight division. On May 3, 2014, he fought Carlos Molina. Broner won the fight by a unanimous decision, showing he was still a top boxer.
He then fought Emmanuel Taylor in September 2014. Broner won this fight by unanimous decision as well, even knocking Taylor down in the final round.
Winning a Fourth World Title
In October 2015, Broner fought Khabib Allakhverdiev for the vacant WBA light welterweight title. Broner won by TKO in the twelfth round. This victory made him a world champion in four different weight classes.
Defending the Title
Broner defended his WBA light welterweight title against Ashley Theophane in April 2016. Broner won by TKO in the ninth round.
Return to Welterweight
Tough Fight Against Porter
On June 20, 2015, Broner fought fellow Ohio boxer and former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter. Broner lost the fight by a unanimous decision. Porter controlled most of the match, though Broner did knock him down in the final round.
Second Return to Light Welterweight
Facing Mikey Garcia
On July 29, 2017, Broner fought WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia. The fight was at the super lightweight limit. Garcia won the fight by a unanimous decision. He was more active and landed more punches throughout the match.
A Close Draw
Broner's next fight was against former two-weight world champion Jessie Vargas on April 21, 2018. The fight ended in a 12-round majority draw. This means one judge scored it for Broner, and the other two scored it as a tie. It was a very close fight, with both boxers having strong moments.
Third Return to Welterweight
Fighting Manny Pacquiao
On January 19, 2019, Broner faced boxing legend Manny Pacquiao for the WBA welterweight title. The fight took place in Las Vegas. Broner lost the fight by a unanimous decision. Pacquiao controlled the fight, landing more punches and putting pressure on Broner.
