Aefligen is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Emmental area of Switzerland. It is part of the canton of Bern.

A Brief Look at Aefligen's History

Aefligen was first mentioned in old writings in 1261. Back then, it was known as Efflingen. In the 1200s, a nearby religious house called Fraubrunnen Abbey gained independence. Aefligen became connected to this abbey. By 1297, Aefligen was in charge of managing some nearby villages.

However, Aefligen was not fully independent. For small crimes, people from Aefligen had to go to a court in Bätterkinden. It also belonged to the county of Landshut and was part of the church area of Kirchberg. Around 1510-1514, Landshut lost its control over Aefligen. Aefligen then became a special area ruled by Bern.

Starting in the 1300s, Aefligen and its neighbors had disagreements with the Abbey. These were about sharing fields and forests. It wasn't until 1847 that Aefligen got its own forests. This happened when the Rüdtligerwald forest became part of the community. In 1856, a part of Moos also joined Aefligen.

In 1838, the first bridge over the Emme River was finished. This made it easier for people and goods to travel through Aefligen. In 1875, a train station was built, connecting Aefligen to other towns. Even with new factories like a fabric factory (1866–1920) and a metal factory (1945), farming remained the main way people made a living in Aefligen throughout the 1900s.
