Aike is a small village, also called a hamlet, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located near the Yorkshire Wolds. Aike is about 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) north of Beverley. It is also very close to the River Hull.

Aike is reached by a single lane that is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long. This lane is a "no-through road," meaning it doesn't go past the village. However, a farm track continues from the village to a bridge. In 1931, only 48 people lived in Aike.

What Does Aike Mean?

The name Aike comes from an old word for "oak" tree. In the local accent, the name kept its original sound. It was not changed to "oak" or "oake" like other similar words. Sometimes, people even say the name as "Yack."

Aike's History as a Village

Aike used to be its own small area, called a township. It was part of bigger parishes like Lockington and St. John Beverley. In 1866, Aike became its own official civil parish. However, on April 1, 1935, it joined with Lockington parish.

The main church for both Lockington and Aike is St Mary's Church. This church is located in Lockington, about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) west of Aike. Aike has never had its own church. This is why it is called a hamlet, which is a very small settlement.

When Aike Was an Island

The land around Aike is very low. It is too low for water to easily flow into the nearby River Hull. Before a large drainage channel was built in 1798, Aike was different. The main group of houses in Aike were actually on a small island! This channel, called the Beverley and Barmston Drain, helped to dry out the land.

Things to See in Aike

Aike is home to Aike Grange Stud. This is a special park where people train horses for dressage. Dressage is a type of horse riding where horses perform graceful movements. The park also hosts competitions.

There is a historic house in Aike called "Sunnyside" or "Sunnyside Cottage." It was built in the 1700s. The house is made of brick and has a special roof called a pantile roof. It also has sash windows, which slide up and down. This house is important because it is the only building in the area that is officially protected as a "grade II listed building." It was given this special status in 1987.
