Al Cole's Boxing Journey
Al Cole was a tall boxer, standing 6 feet 4 inches. He was a very strong and successful fighter in the cruiserweight division. His hometown was Spring Valley, New York.
Becoming a Champion
Al Cole started his boxing career very well, winning 20 of his first 21 fights. After only three years as a professional, he won the IBF cruiserweight title. He beat the champion, James Warring, to earn this big win.
Cole successfully defended his title five times. Some of his most important wins were against Uriah Grant. Uriah Grant was a fighter who had even beaten the famous boxer Thomas Hearns. Cole defeated Grant twice, showing he was a top champion.
Beyond boxing, Al Cole also appeared in movies. He worked with famous actors like Will Smith and Robert De Niro. When he auditioned for the movie Ali, he mentioned that people actually got knocked out during the tryouts!
Moving to Heavyweight Fights
Al Cole decided to move up to the heavyweight division without losing his cruiserweight title. This meant he would fight much bigger and stronger opponents.
His first heavyweight fight was tough. He lost to Tim Witherspoon by a unanimous decision. A year later, he lost to Michael Grant. Cole then had a good fight, ending in a draw with the undefeated boxer Kirk Johnson. However, Johnson won their second fight. This loss started a tougher period in Cole's career.
Cole continued to face many strong heavyweights. He fought against boxers like Corrie Sanders and Jameel McCline. He had a brief comeback, winning against Vincent Maddalone and David Izonritei. He also had a draw with Jeremy Williams. But he then lost to boxers like Lance Whitaker, former champion Hasim Rahman, and Sultan Ibragimov.
After retiring for a short time, Cole returned to the ring. He defeated a promising heavyweight, Joey "Minnesota Ice" Abell, in Sweden. A year later, he lost to Timur Ibragimov. Cole once said about his long career, "I gave people what they wanted to see—an action-packed fight."
Life as a Trainer
Today, Al Cole works as a professional boxing trainer. He helps other boxers get ready for their fights. He has trained boxers like Maurice Harris, who was a USBA Heavyweight Champion.
