Alfred Rudolph Cole (born April 21, 1964), known as Al Cole, is an American former professional boxer. He won the IBF cruiserweight title. He was a very strong boxer in that division. Later, he moved up to the heavyweight division, but he did not have as much success there. In 2001, Al Cole also acted in the movie Ali. He played the boxer Ernie Terrell in the film.

Al Cole's Boxing Career

Al Cole was a tall boxer, standing 6 feet 4 inches. He was a very strong and successful cruiserweight. His hometown was Spring Valley, New York.

Cole started his boxing career with a great record. He won 20 of his first 21 fights. After only three years as a professional, he won the IBF cruiserweight title. He defeated the champion, James Warring, to earn this title.

Defending the Cruiserweight Title

Al Cole defended his cruiserweight title five times. This means he kept his championship belt through five different fights. Some of his most important wins were against Uriah Grant. Uriah Grant was a fighter who had beaten Thomas Hearns, another famous boxer. Cole defeated Grant twice. Both times, he won by a unanimous decision, meaning all the judges agreed he was the winner.

Al Cole also appeared in movies. He worked with famous actors like Robert De Niro, Will Smith, and Jamie Foxx. When he auditioned for the movie Ali, some people actually got knocked out during the tryouts. Cole said, "People really got knocked out auditioning for the movie roles."

Moving to Heavyweight Fights

Al Cole moved up to the heavyweight division without losing his cruiserweight title. In his first heavyweight fight, he lost to Tim Witherspoon. A year later, Michael Grant defeated Cole.

Cole then had a draw with Kirk Johnson, who was an undefeated boxer at the time. A draw means the fight ended with no winner. However, Johnson won their second fight. This loss started a difficult period in Cole's career.

Cole later lost to other strong heavyweights like Corrie Sanders and Jameel McCline. He then had a brief comeback. He won against Vincent Maddalone and David Izonritei. He also had another draw with Jeremy Williams. However, he could not keep this winning streak going. He lost to Lance Whitaker, former champion Hasim Rahman, and Sultan Ibragimov.

After these fights, Cole retired from boxing. But he returned later to defeat Joey "Minnesota Ice" Abell in Sweden in 2008. A year later, he lost to Timur Ibragimov. Cole had planned a rematch with Abell in 2010, but it did not happen. Looking back on his long career, Cole said he "gave people what they wanted to see—an action-packed fight."

Life as a Boxing Trainer

Today, Al Cole works as a professional boxing trainer. He helps other boxers get ready for their fights. He has trained boxers like Maurice Harris, who was a USBA Heavyweight Champion.
