Exploring Albertville's Location
Albertville is one of two main cities in the Savoie area. It sits where the Arly river meets the Isère river. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. These include Belle Étoile and Dent de Cons.
The city's elevation ranges from about 345 meters to over 2000 meters high. Nearby mountain ranges are the Bauges, the Beaufortain, and the start of the Vanoise.
A Look at Albertville's Past
The city of Albertville as we know it today was created in 1836. King Charles Albert of Sardinia decided to combine two older towns. These were the medieval town of Conflans, which had buildings from the 1300s, and the town of L'Hôpital.
Since then, Albertville has been an important place for trade. Goods moved through here between France, Italy, and Switzerland. Industries like paper mills and hydroelectricity also grew along its rivers.
The 1992 Winter Olympics
Albertville became world-famous when it hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics. Many of the sports events took place in the Savoie region. After the Olympics, some of the sports buildings were changed for other uses.
However, some Olympic venues are still there. For example, the ice rink, called La halle de glace Olympique, is still used. It was designed by a famous architect named Jacques Kalisz. Even with the Olympics, Albertville is still known more for its industries than for tourism.
In 2003, Albertville was given a special title. It was named a "Town of Art and History." This means it has important historical and artistic buildings.
