The Albula District was a special administrative area in the canton of Graubünden, located in Switzerland. You can think of it like a county or a region within a larger state. It was a place with beautiful mountains and valleys. In 2015, about 8,210 people lived there. The district covered an area of about 723 square kilometers. The main town, or capital, was Tiefencastel.
The Albula District was replaced on January 1, 2017. It became part of a new area called the Albula Region. This change was part of a bigger plan to reorganize how the canton of Graubünden was managed.

What Was the Albula District?
The Albula District was made up of four smaller sections. These sections were called Kreise, which means sub-districts. They were named Alvaschein, Belfort, Bergün, and Surses.
Inside these sub-districts were a total of 8 municipalities. Municipalities are like towns or local communities. These towns sometimes joined together to form larger ones. This happened in 2015 and 2016.
Joining of Municipalities
Over time, some of the smaller towns in the Albula District decided to join together. This helped them work better as larger communities.
New Towns in 2015
On January 1, 2015, several towns merged into one. The towns of Alvaschein, Mon, Stierva, Tiefencastel, Alvaneu, Brienz/Brinzauls, and Surava all joined. They formed a new, larger municipality called Albula/Alvra.
New Towns in 2016
Another big merger happened on January 1, 2016. The towns of Bivio, Cunter, Marmorera, Mulegns, Riom-Parsonz, Salouf, Savognin, Sur, and Tinizong-Rona combined. They created the new municipality of Surses.
Languages Spoken
The Albula District had two main official languages. These were German and Romansh. Romansh is a special language spoken mostly in parts of Switzerland.
There was also a small number of people who spoke Italian. However, in the town of Bivio, German became the main official language over time.
