Althorne is a small village in Essex, England. It's located about 21 kilometers (13 miles) southeast of Chelmsford, which is the main city in Essex. Althorne is part of the Maldon district. It's also in the area represented by a Member of Parliament for Maldon & East Chelmsford. The village has its own local council, called a Parish Council.
In 2011, about 1,159 people lived in Althorne.
Althorne is found on the Dengie peninsula. It's about 5 kilometers (3 miles) northwest of Burnham-on-Crouch. The village is also about 3 kilometers (2 miles) northwest of Bridgemarsh Island in the River Crouch.
You can get to London from Althorne by train. The Southminster Branch Line connects Wickford to London's Liverpool Street Station. The train station in Althorne is called Althorne railway station. It's a bit far from the main village and you reach it by a long, steep path. There are no big main roads (like A roads) right next to the village. The main roads nearby are the B1010 to Burnham and the B1018 from Maldon to Southminster.

What Althorne Means
The name Althorne has an interesting meaning from Old English. It means "place at the burnt thorn-tree." The name comes from two old words: æled (meaning 'burnt') and thorn (meaning 'thorn-tree'). The earliest time we know the village was recorded was in 1198, when it was called Aledhorn.
Famous People from Althorne
- Phillip Scott Burge moved to Althorne just before World War 1. He became a top British fighter pilot. He shot down 11 enemy planes between March and July 1918. Sadly, he was shot down over Seclin, France, and died on July 24, 1918.
- Mark Lubbock (1898–1986) was a British conductor and composer. He wrote operettas and light music. He lived in Althorne at The Old Forge for many years starting in the 1940s with his wife, the writer Bea Howe (1898–1992).
- John McVicar (1940–2022) was a journalist. He was living in Althorne when he passed away.
- Hilda Ormsby (1877–1943) was a British academic and geographer. She died in Althorne.
- Harrison Scott (born 1996) is a British racing car driver. He was born in Althorne.
Bridgemarsh Marina
Bridgemarsh Marina is a place where boats are kept. It's about one to two miles from Althorne village. It's also close to Althorne railway station. You can get there by Bridgemarsh Lane, which is a road without many services. The Marina is located on Althorne Creek. On the other side of the creek is Bridgemarsh Island.
