Ameesha Patel (born June 9, 1975) is an Indian actress. She acts in Hindi and Telugu movies. Ameesha has won several awards, including a Filmfare Award.
She started her acting career in 2000 with the movie Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. This film was a big hit. She also starred in the Telugu action movie Badri (2000). In 2001, she appeared in the popular film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. This movie earned her a Filmfare Special Performance Award. After some ups and downs, Ameesha made a big comeback. She starred in the sequel Gadar 2 (2023). This movie became her highest-earning film. Besides acting, Ameesha Patel also helps with many good causes.

Early Life and Education
Ameesha Patel was born on June 9, 1975, in Mumbai, India. Her father, Amit Patel, is Gujarati. Her mother, Asha, has Sindhi and Punjabi roots. Ameesha has a brother named Ashmit Patel. Her grandfather, Barrister Rajni Patel, was a well-known lawyer and politician.
Ameesha started learning Bharatnatyam dance when she was five years old. She went to Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. She was even the head girl there in 1992–93. After school, she went to Tufts University in Boston, United States. She first studied bio-genetic engineering. Later, she changed her major to economics.
After college, Ameesha worked as an economic analyst. She also got an offer from a big company called Morgan Stanley, but she turned it down. When she returned to India, she joined a theater group. She acted in plays, including one in Urdu called Neelam. At the same time, she started modeling. She appeared in commercials for popular Indian brands like Bajaj and Lux.

Starting Out and Early Success (2000–2002)
Ameesha Patel got her first acting chance from Rakesh Roshan. He wanted her to star with his son, Hrithik Roshan, in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000). She first said no because she wanted to study. But later, she got another chance and agreed. She played Sonia Saxena, a college girl in love. The movie was a huge success. It made Ameesha a rising star. She was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Her next film was the Telugu movie Badri, starring Pawan Kalyan. This film was also very successful.
In 2001, Ameesha starred in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha with Sunny Deol. She was chosen from many girls who auditioned. The movie was set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. Ameesha played Sakeena, a Muslim girl who finds safety with Sunny Deol's character. Her acting was highly praised. She won the Filmfare Special Award and was nominated for Best Actress. This film became one of the biggest hits of the 21st century.
After these big successes, some of her films did not do as well. In 2002, she had a few movies that were not very successful. However, her film Humraaz was a major hit. From 2003 to 2006, Ameesha's career faced some challenges. Many of her films during this time did not do well at the box office. In 2003, she appeared in her only Tamil film, Pudhiya Geethai. In 2004, she was in the music videos for "O Meri Jaan" and "Hai Kasam Tu Na Ja" by Adnan Sami.
In 2005, she starred in Mangal Pandey: The Rising with Aamir Khan. She played Jwala, a kind widow. This was her first role where she looked less glamorous. The film did moderately well. She also appeared in other films like Vaada and Elaan.
In 2006, Ameesha was in six films. Most of them did not succeed commercially. However, her role in Ankahee earned her good reviews. She played a wife whose husband cheats on her. Critics noted her dignified performance in the film.
Comeback and Recent Work (2007–Present)
Ameesha's career started to improve in 2007. She appeared in the comedy-drama Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.. This film had moderate success. She also co-starred in the horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa.
In 2008, Ameesha appeared in a special dance number called "Lazy Lamhe" in the film Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. She even learned scuba diving for the song. Although the film was not a big hit, her appearance gained attention.
After some delays and shelved projects, Ameesha returned to Hindi cinema in 2013. She had a special appearance in Race 2. This film was a box office success. She also starred in Shortcut Romeo.

Ameesha Patel has performed in many concerts and world tours. In 2001, she joined The Roshans: Hrithik Live in Concert with Hrithik Roshan. In 2004, she was part of the Craze 2004 world tour. She also performed in Adnan Sami's Kuch Dil Se… tour in the US and Canada in 2005.
In 2008, she participated in Himesh Reshammiya's concert Karzzzz Musical Curtain Raiser. She also joined Akshay Kumar's Christmas Eve show Chandni Chowk to Hong.
Helping Others
Ameesha Patel is also involved in humanitarian work. In September 2004, she joined PETA. This organization works to protect animals. Ameesha posed as a prisoner to show the struggles of animals in zoos. She said that animals need people to fight for their freedom.
In February 2005, Ameesha performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert. This event raised money for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. She also took part in a charity event in New Delhi in December 2005. This event helped people with disabilities.

Ameesha Patel dated filmmaker Vikram Bhatt for several years. Their relationship ended in 2008. Later, she confirmed her relationship with London-based businessman Kanav Puri in 2008. However, they broke up in 2010.
In 2009, Ameesha and her brother, Ashmit, became friends again. In December 2009, her mother confirmed that the family had resolved their differences after a five-year separation.
