Anton Vladimirovich Shipulin (Russian: Антон Владимирович Шипулин; born August 21, 1987) is a famous Russian biathlete who has now retired from the sport. He is also a politician and has been a member of the State Duma since 2019.

Anton Shipulin's Early Life

Anton was born into a family of athletes. His parents, Vladimir and Alla Shipulin, were great at cross-country skiing and biathlon. He started training very young. At first, he learned ski racing from his father. But when he saw his older sister, Anastasiya Kuzmina, doing biathlon with a rifle, he wanted to try it too.

In 2002, his parents sent him to a sports school in Khanty-Mansiysk. There, he trained with Mikhail Novikov, who also coached Svetlana Sleptsova. This is where Anton's biathlon journey truly began.

Anton Shipulin's Sports Career

In 2004, Anton returned to his hometown, Tyumen, and started studying at the Tyumen Law Institute. After winning two events at the 2005 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, he caught the eye of Vladimir Putrov. Putrov was a coach for Olympic champions like Juri Kashkarov and Aleksandr Popov.

Anton moved to Yekaterinburg in 2006 after Putrov invited him. He won his first big race as part of a team at the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2006 in Presque Isle, USA.

Junior and Youth Success

In 2007, in Val Martello, Italy, Anton won a silver medal in an individual race. This was his first personal medal at an international event. At the Biathlon European Championships 2007, he won a full set of medals: silver in sprint, bronze in pursuit, and gold in the relay.

He did very well at the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2008 in Ruhpolding. He won gold in both sprint and pursuit races. He also won gold with his team in the relay. In an individual race, he missed a shot and got a silver medal, missing gold by less than a second. At the Biathlon European Championships 2008, he became the best European champion for athletes under 21. He won all three individual races and the relay.

World Cup Debut and Olympic Medals

For the 2008/2009 season, Anton trained with the Russian national team. He started the season in the IBU Cup. In December 2008, he finished in the top three in a pursuit race. In January 2009, he made his first appearance in the 2009–10 Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof. He finished 72nd in his first sprint race. He finished 72nd again in his next World Cup sprint in Ruhpolding. These low scores were partly because he had a cold and was tired from intense training.

Anton did not go to the Biathlon World Championships 2009. Instead, he prepared for the European Championships with his personal coach. He won a bronze medal at the Biathlon European Championships 2009 in Ufa in both sprint and relay. This earned him a spot back in the World Cup. He scored his first World Cup points by finishing 29th in a pursuit race. He ended that season in 93rd place overall.

Anton was known as the best Russian biathlon shooter in the 2009/2010 season. He won a bronze medal with the Russian men's relay team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. After this, the Russian president gave him an award called For Merit to the Fatherland.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Anton won a gold medal in the men's relay with his teammates Evgeny Ustyugov, Alexey Volkov, and Dmitry Malyshko. However, this medal was later disqualified.

His sister, Anastasiya Kuzmina, is also a very successful biathlete for Slovak. She won Olympic gold medals in sprint in 2010 and 2014, and in mass start in 2018.

Anton Shipulin announced his retirement from biathlon on December 25, 2018, after competing in the World Team Challenge.
