Antonio started his football journey at Sporting de Gijón. He finished his playing career with the famous club Real Madrid. Sadly, injuries made it hard for him to play much at Real Madrid.

Maceda played 36 games for the Spanish national team. He also represented Spain in two World Cups and the Euro 1984 tournament.

Antonio Maceda's Club Career

Antonio Maceda was born in Sagunto, a city in Spain. He played for two main clubs during his career: Sporting de Gijón and Real Madrid.

Playing for Sporting Gijón

In his third year as a professional player (the 1978–79 season), Antonio helped Sporting de Gijón finish second in La Liga. This is the top football league in Spain. He then became a very important defender for the team.

Antonio was good at scoring goals too. In his last two seasons with Sporting Gijón, he scored nine goals in the league.

Moving to Real Madrid

In the summer of 1985, Antonio Maceda joined the big club Real Madrid. In his first season with them (1985–86), he scored five goals. That year, Real Madrid won both the league title and the UEFA Cup. Winning two major titles in one season is called a double.

Unfortunately, Antonio got a serious injury while playing for the national team. This injury forced him to stop playing football in 1988. He was only 31 years old. Overall, he played 223 games in Spain's top league and scored 24 goals.

After Playing Football

After retiring as a player, Antonio Maceda worked as a radio commentator. He then became a coach. He coached his first club, Sporting de Gijón, for a short time in 1997–98. He also managed the team for most of the 2002–03 season.

Antonio Maceda's International Career

In Euro 1984, which was held in France, Antonio scored a winning goal in the 89th minute. This goal was against West Germany, who were the champions from the previous Euro tournament. His goal sent Spain to the semi-finals.

In the semi-final, Spain played against Denmark. Antonio scored in this game too! Spain won the match after a penalty shootout. Antonio missed the final match against France because he was suspended. Spain lost the final 2–0.

Retirement from International Football

Antonio Maceda stopped playing for the national team after the 1986 World Cup. This was due to a serious injury. His first game for Spain was on March 25, 1981. It was a friendly match against England. Spain won 2–1 at Wembley Stadium, which was the first time Spain had ever beaten England there.
