Arietta is a small town in Hamilton County, New York, United States. It's known for its beautiful natural surroundings. In 2020, about 292 people lived there. The town was named after the mother of one of its first settlers, Rensselaer Van Rennslaer.

History of Arietta

The first people settled in the Arietta area around 1827. They built homes near Piseco Lake. The town of Arietta was officially created in 1836. It was formed from a part of the town of Lake Pleasant. Later, in 1837 and 1861, some parts of Arietta were used to create or expand the nearby town of Long Lake.

Geography of Arietta

Arietta is a large town, covering about 329 square miles (853 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a smaller part being water, like lakes and rivers. The town is located inside the Adirondack Park, a huge protected area known for its forests, mountains, and lakes. The southern border of Arietta touches Fulton County.

Rivers and Lakes

  • The East Canada Creek flows south from the area around Powley. It eventually reaches the Mohawk River.
  • The West Branch of the Sacandaga River starts from Piseco Lake. It flows east through a channel called the Piseco Outlet.
  • Piseco Lake is a large lake located west of New York State Route 8.
  • Oxbow Lake is a smaller lake northeast of Piseco Lake. Part of it is also in the town of Lake Pleasant.
