Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi OAL (born August 26, 1927 – died January 24, 2023) was a famous Indian architect. He was a very important person in Indian architecture. He helped change how buildings were designed in India.
Doshi worked with famous architects like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. He was a leader in bringing new, modern styles of architecture to India. These styles included modernism and brutalism.
Some of his well-known designs include FLAME University, IIM Bangalore, and NIFT Delhi. He also designed the Aranya Low Cost Housing in Indore. This project won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
In 2018, he became the first Indian architect to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This award is like the Nobel Prize for architecture. He also received other important awards from the Indian government, like the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. In 2022, he won the Royal Institute of British Architects' Royal Gold Medal.

Early Life and Education
Balkrishna Doshi was born in Pune, India. His family was Hindu. His mother passed away when he was very young. His father remarried, and his grandfather and aunts helped raise him.
When he was eleven, Doshi was in a fire accident. After that, he walked with a slight limp. He studied architecture at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai. He attended from 1947 to 1950.
Building a Career
Working with Masters
In 1950, Doshi traveled to Europe. He worked closely with the famous architect Le Corbusier in Paris from 1951 to 1954. In 1954, Doshi returned to India. He helped supervise Corbusier's building projects in Ahmedabad. These included the Villa Sarabhai and the Mill Owners' Association Building. Le Corbusier greatly influenced Doshi's later work.

Doshi started his own design studio, Vastu-Shilpa, in 1955. He also worked with another famous architect, Louis Kahn. This was when Kahn designed the campus for the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. In 1962, Doshi started the School of Architecture (S.A).
Doshi as an Educator
Doshi was not just a great architect. He was also known for being an amazing teacher. He helped create many important schools and centers. He was the first director of the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad (1962–72). He also founded the School of Planning (1972–79).
He was also a founding dean of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (1972–81). Doshi helped start the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation. This research institute did important work on building affordable homes and planning cities. He was known for his ideas on low-income housing. He also designed buildings in ways that were good for the environment.

Doshi often said that he found inspiration in old Indian buildings. He was also inspired by the work of architects from Europe and America. His designs often blended traditional Indian ideas with modern ways of building.
Personal Life
Balkrishna Doshi married Kamala Parikh in 1955. They had three daughters: Tejal, Radhika, and Maneesha. His daughters also became creative professionals. Tejal is a textile designer, Radhika is an architect and fashion designer, and Maneesha is a painter.
Doshi passed away in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on January 24, 2023. He was 95 years old.
Awards and Recognition
Doshi was a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He also helped choose winners for the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
In 2007, Doshi won the first Global Award for Sustainable Architecture. This award recognized his efforts to create buildings that were good for the environment. It also honored his new ideas for development.
In March 2018, Doshi won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This is one of the highest honors for an architect. The Pritzker jury said that Doshi "always created an architecture that is serious, never flashy." They also noted his "deep sense of responsibility" to his country and its people.
