Bassenthwaite is a village in England, located in the beautiful Lake District National Park. It's found to the east of Bassenthwaite Lake in an area called Cumbria. Long ago, it was part of Cumberland.
In 2011, about 481 people lived here. The village has a Church of England church called St John's, and a small Methodist chapel. Bassenthwaite looks like a classic English village, with a village green, a primary school, and a stream flowing through it.
The village is at the foot of Skiddaw, one of England's highest mountains, which is about 3,054 feet (931 meters) tall. You can see several other mountains from Bassenthwaite, including Robin Hood, Ullock Pike, Longside Edge, and Barf.
Where is Bassenthwaite?
Bassenthwaite is quite close to Bassenthwaite Lake, about 1 mile (1.6 km) away. It's also about 7.5 miles (12 km) east of Cockermouth and 7.1 miles (11.4 km) north of Keswick.
Larger cities like Carlisle are about 23 miles (37 km) to the south, and Penrith is about 23.9 miles (38.5 km) to the west.
What's in a Name?
The name 'Bassenthwaite' comes from an old language called Old Norse. It means "Bastun's clearing."
The first part, 'Bastun', was likely a nickname or surname meaning "stick." The second part, 'þveit', means "clearing" in Old Norse. The lake, which was once called "Bastun's water," got its name from the village.
How Bassenthwaite is Governed
Bassenthwaite is part of the Workington area for the UK Parliament. This means people in Bassenthwaite vote for a person to represent them in the government.
For local decisions, Bassenthwaite is part of the Cumberland area. This is a type of local government called a unitary authority.
The village also has its own local group, called the Bassenthwaite Parish Council. This council helps make decisions about things that affect the village directly.
Old Churches
The Church of St Bega is the main church for Bassenthwaite. It's located in a field near the lake, a bit away from the village itself. This church was built a very long time ago, around 950 AD. It's considered a very important historical building, known as a Grade II* listed building.
St John's Church was built later. It was made as a "chapel of ease," which means it was a smaller church built to make it easier for people to attend services without traveling far to the main parish church.
