Benjamin James Chilwell (born 21 December 1996) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a left-back or left wing-back for Chelsea and the England national team.
Ben started his career at Leicester City. He also played on loan for Huddersfield Town. In 2020, he joined Chelsea. In his first season, he helped Chelsea win the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League. Ben made his debut for the England national team in 2018. He was part of the England squad that finished second at UEFA Euro 2020.

Early Life and Football Beginnings
Benjamin James Chilwell was born on 21 December 1996. His hometown is Milton Keynes, England. He grew up in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. Ben went to Redborne Upper School and Community College.
He started playing football at a young age. He joined Rushden & Diamonds' youth academy.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at Leicester City
Ben Chilwell joined Leicester City's academy when he was 12 years old in 2009. He quickly showed his talent. At the end of the 2014–15 season, he won the Academy Player of the Year award.
He got the number 30 shirt for the 2015–16 season. On 27 October 2015, Ben made his first-team debut. This was in a League Cup match against Hull City. Leicester lost the game after a penalty shootout.
Loan to Huddersfield Town
On 19 November 2015, Ben joined Championship club Huddersfield Town. This was a loan spell until January 2016. He played his first game for them nine days later. Even though he was there for only six weeks, Ben said this time helped him grow as a player. He learned a lot from manager David Wagner.
In January 2016, Leicester City called him back. On 10 January, he played his first FA Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur. He was praised for being an "exceptional" attacking player. On 28 July 2016, Ben signed a new contract with Leicester. He was given the number 3 shirt for the 2016–17 season.
Premier League Debut and First Goal
Ben made his Premier League debut on 26 December 2016. It was a home game against Everton. He played 19 games in the 2016–17 season. This included two games in the UEFA Champions League. He scored his first goal on 18 May 2017 against Tottenham Hotspur.
During the 2017–18 season, Ben became Leicester's main left-back. He signed another new contract with Leicester on 20 October 2018. Five days later, he scored one goal and helped with two others. This was in Leicester's huge 9–0 win against Southampton. On 9 November 2019, Ben played his 100th game for Leicester City. This was a 2–0 win against Arsenal.
Moving to Chelsea
On 26 August 2020, Ben Chilwell signed a five-year contract with Chelsea. The transfer fee was reported to be £45 million. He made his debut on 23 September. He came on as a substitute and assisted a goal in a 6–0 win against Barnsley. In his first league start on 3 October, Ben scored and assisted another goal. Chelsea won 4–0 against Crystal Palace.
Champions League Success
On 7 April 2021, Ben scored his first UEFA Champions League goal. This was in a 2–0 win against Porto. On 16 May, he scored against his old club Leicester City in the 2021 FA Cup final. However, the goal was disallowed by VAR. Leicester went on to win the final 1–0.
On 29 May, Ben won his first major trophy. Chelsea beat Manchester City 1–0 in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final.
Recent Seasons at Chelsea
On 2 October 2021, Ben scored his first goal of the season. This was in a 3–1 win against Southampton. He then scored in Chelsea's next two league games. This made him the first English player since Frank Lampard to score in four Premier League games in a row for Chelsea.
On 23 November 2021, Ben got a serious knee injury. This happened during a Champions League game against Juventus. He needed surgery and missed the rest of the season.
Ben signed a new contract with Chelsea on 11 April 2023. This keeps him at the club until 2027. In August, he was named Chelsea's new vice-captain. He supports captain Reece James. On 25 February 2024, Ben captained Chelsea in the 2024 EFL Cup Final. They lost 1–0 to Liverpool.
In September 2024, Chelsea's new manager Enzo Maresca announced that Ben was back in the squad. This was for an EFL Cup game against Barrow.
International Career with England
In September 2018, Ben was called up to the senior England squad. This was for a friendly match against Switzerland. He made his debut on 11 September. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win. This game was special because it was at his club ground, the King Power Stadium. He was the first England player to debut at his club ground since 1997.
Ben was part of the 26-man England squad for UEFA Euro 2020. On 22 June 2021, Ben and teammate Mason Mount had to self-isolate. This was after contact with a Scotland player who tested positive for COVID-19.
On 9 October 2021, Ben scored his first goal for England. This was in a 5–0 win against Andorra. It was a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
Personal Life
Ben Chilwell's father came to England from New Zealand in 1993. Ben's maternal grandfather, Guy Shuttleworth, was also a sportsman. He played football for Corinthian-Casuals. He also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University. Ben himself played cricket for his local club, Flitwick.
Ben is the godfather to his former Leicester City teammate James Maddison's son.
