Benjamin James Chilwell (born 21 December 1996) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a left-back or left wing-back for the Premier League club Chelsea. He also plays for the England national team.
Ben started his career at Leicester City. He also spent some time on loan at Huddersfield Town. In 2020, he joined Chelsea. In his first season there, he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League. He has played over 100 games for Chelsea. In 2025, while on loan at Crystal Palace, he won the FA Cup.
Ben Chilwell first played for England in 2018. He was part of the England team that finished second at UEFA Euro 2020.

Ben Chilwell's Early Life
Benjamin James Chilwell was born on 21 December 1996 in Milton Keynes, England. He grew up in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. He went to Redborne Upper School and Community College in Ampthill.
Ben Chilwell's Club Career
Playing for Leicester City
Ben Chilwell joined Leicester City's youth academy when he was 12 years old in 2009. Before that, he played for Rushden & Diamonds. He was named their Academy Player of the Year at the end of the 2014–15 season.
In October 2015, Ben made his first team debut for Leicester City. This was in a League Cup match against Hull City. Leicester lost the game after a penalty shootout.
In November 2015, Chilwell went on loan to Championship club Huddersfield Town. He played his first game for them nine days later. Even though he was only there for six weeks, Ben said this time helped him grow a lot as a player.
Leicester City called him back from his loan in January 2016. He played his first FA Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur. He was praised for being "exceptional" in that game.
In July 2016, Ben signed a new contract with Leicester. He made his Premier League debut in December 2016 against Everton. He played 19 games in the 2016–17 season. He scored his first goal in May 2017 against Tottenham Hotspur.
During the 2017–18 season, Ben became Leicester's main left-back. He received his first red card in January 2018 against Chelsea.
He signed another new contract with Leicester in October 2018. Five days later, he scored one goal and helped set up two others. This was in Leicester's huge 9–0 win against Southampton. In November 2019, Ben played his 100th game for Leicester City. This was in a 2–0 win against Arsenal.
Joining Chelsea Football Club
On 26 August 2020, Ben Chilwell signed a five-year contract with Chelsea. The transfer fee was reported to be £45 million. He made his debut for Chelsea on 23 September. He came on as a substitute and helped set up a goal in a 6–0 win against Barnsley. In his first league start for Chelsea, he scored a goal and assisted another. Chelsea won that game 4–0 against Crystal Palace.
In April 2021, Ben scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Porto. In May, he played in the 2021 FA Cup final against his old club, Leicester City. Chelsea lost that game 1–0. On 29 May, Ben won his first major trophy. Chelsea beat Manchester City 1–0 in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final.
In October 2021, Ben scored his first goal of the new season against Southampton. He then scored in Chelsea's next two league games as well. This made him the first English player since Frank Lampard to score in four Premier League games in a row for Chelsea.
In November 2021, Ben got a serious knee injury during a Champions League game against Juventus. He had to have surgery, which meant he missed the rest of that season.
Recent Years at Chelsea
Ben Chilwell signed a new contract with Chelsea in April 2023. This contract keeps him at the club until 2027. In August 2023, he was named Chelsea's new vice-captain. He helped lead the team alongside captain Reece James. In February 2024, Ben captained Chelsea in the 2024 EFL Cup final. They lost that match 1–0 to Liverpool.
In late August 2024, there was some uncertainty about Ben's future at Chelsea. The new manager, Enzo Maresca, said Ben might struggle to fit into his plans. However, in September, Maresca announced that Ben was back in the squad. He played one game for Chelsea that season, coming on as a substitute in a 5–0 win against Barrow in the EFL Cup.
Loan to Crystal Palace
On 3 February 2025, Ben Chilwell joined Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the 2024–25 season. Crystal Palace went on to win the FA Cup for the first time in their history. Ben was an unused substitute in the final, where they beat Manchester City 1–0. On 20 May, he scored his first goal for Palace in a 4–2 league win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Ben Chilwell's International Career
In September 2018, Ben Chilwell was called up to the main England squad. He made his debut on 11 September in a friendly match against Switzerland. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win. This game was played at Leicester's home ground, the King Power Stadium. Ben was the first England player to debut at his club's stadium since 1997. He made his first start for England in October against Croatia.
Ben was chosen for the 26-man England squad for UEFA Euro 2020. In June 2021, Ben and fellow England player Mason Mount had to self-isolate. This was after they came into contact with a Scotland player who tested positive for COVID-19.
On 9 October 2021, Ben scored his first goal for England. This was in a 5–0 win against Andorra during a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
Ben Chilwell's Personal Life
Ben Chilwell's father came from New Zealand and moved to England in 1993. Ben's grandfather, Guy Shuttleworth, was also a sportsman. He played football for Corinthian-Casuals and even played for the England Amateurs team in 1949. He also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University. Ben himself played cricket for his local club, Flitwick.
Ben Chilwell is the godfather to his former Leicester City teammate James Maddison's son.
