Ben Rinnes (which means Beinn Ruaidhneis in Gaelic) is a cool mountain in northern Scotland. It's found in an area called Banffshire. This mountain is super popular with people who love to hike and explore!
Ben Rinnes covers about 20 square kilometers. It's located just 8 kilometers southwest of a town called Dufftown. There's a main path that makes it easy to climb. You can get to it easily from a nearby car park. A group called Friends of Ben Rinnes has been working hard. They make the paths even better for everyone. They also help protect the delicate plants and soil on the mountain's steep sides. Their work has been very successful!
What Can You See From Ben Rinnes?
When you reach the top of Ben Rinnes, the views are amazing! On a clear day, you can see eight different counties. These include Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Morayshire, Nairnshire, Inverness-shire, Ross and Cromarty, Sutherland, and Caithness. You might even spot the beautiful Moray coast! Another awesome sight for hikers are the waterfalls. Many rivers flow down the mountain, like the Linn of Ruthie, creating stunning cascades.
The Ben Rinnes Hill Race
Every year, an exciting hill race takes place on Ben Rinnes. It's part of the Dufftown Highland Games. This race is a real challenge for runners! It starts at the games field. Then, runners go over two smaller hills, Little Conval and Meikle Conval. After that, they climb all the way to the top of Ben Rinnes. Finally, they run back down the same way.
This race is about 22 kilometers long. Runners climb over 1500 meters in total! That's like climbing more than 150 flights of stairs! The fastest times recorded are 1 hour, 53 minutes, and 47 seconds by Eoin Lennon. For women, the record is 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 12 seconds by Jill Stephen. Both of these amazing records were set in 2018.
