Bettingen's Past
Bettingen was first mentioned in official records way back in the year 777. Its name then was Bettingen.
Exploring Bettingen's Geography
Bettingen covers an area of about 2.23 square kilometers (which is about 0.86 square miles). A big part of this land, about 34.1%, is used for farming. Forests cover almost half of the area, about 44.8%. The rest, around 18.8%, is where buildings and roads are located.
Most of the built-up area is for houses and other buildings. A smaller part is for roads and transportation. There are also parks and sports fields. In the forested areas, most of the land is covered with thick forests. Some parts have orchards or small groups of trees. For farming, people grow crops and use pastures for animals. Some land is also used for fruit trees or grapevines.
The town is part of the larger Basel area. It's located on the right bank of the Rhine River and on the hills of St. Chrischona.
Two Parts of Bettingen
Bettingen is actually divided into two main areas.
- Dorf Bettingen is the older part of the town. It's an Alemannic settlement, nestled in a small valley.
- Chrischonahöhe is the other part. It grew up around a special place for pilgrims (people who travel for religious reasons) dedicated to St. Chrischona. This center was started in 1840. A church was built on these heights as early as 1356. Since 1925, there have also been a hospital and homes for older people in this area.
A very tall landmark for Bettingen is the Swisscom-Sendeturm St. Chrischona communications tower. You can find it on the Chrischonahöhe hill.
Bettingen's Coat of Arms
A blazon is a special description of a coat of arms. Bettingen's coat of arms is described as Argent, a Cup Gules. This means it shows a red cup on a silver (or white) background.
