Billy Crudup (born July 8, 1968) is an American actor. He is known for his roles in many popular movies and TV shows. He was nominated for an award for his role in the movie Jesus' Son (1999).
He has starred in many well-known films. These include Almost Famous (2000), Big Fish (2003), and Mission: Impossible III (2006). He also appeared in Watchmen (2009) and Alien: Covenant (2017).
Crudup has been nominated for the Tony Award four times. He won one Tony Award in 2007 for his role in the play The Coast of Utopia. He has also starred in TV shows like Gypsy (2017) and The Morning Show (2019–present). For The Morning Show, he won two Primetime Emmy Awards. In June 2023, he married British actress Naomi Watts.

Early Life and Education
Billy Crudup was born in Manhasset, New York. His parents, Georgann and Thomas Henry Crudup III, divorced when he was young. They later remarried and divorced again. Crudup has mentioned that his father, who passed away in 2005, was always looking for a big success.
Billy is related to Congressman Josiah Crudup of North Carolina. His grandfather on his mother's side was William Cotter "Billy" Gaither, Jr., a famous lawyer. His grandmother later married Episcopal bishop James Duncan.
Billy is the middle of three brothers. His brothers, Tommy and Brooks, are both producers. When he was about eight years old, his family moved from New York. They lived in Texas first, then in Florida. He finished high school at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1986.
Crudup went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his first degree there. He continued acting with the school's acting group, LAB! Theatre. He also acted in a popular show called General College. Later, he studied acting at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1994.
Acting Career
Movies and TV Shows
Crudup started his film career in the 1990s. He appeared in movies like Sleepers (1996) and Inventing the Abbotts (1997). In Without Limits (1998), he played the famous runner Steve Prefontaine. He also voiced the character Ashitaka in the English version of the animated movie Princess Mononoke (1999).
In 2000, he played Russell Hammond in Cameron Crowe's movie Almost Famous. In The Good Shepherd (2006), he played a British spy. That same year, he had a supporting role in Mission: Impossible III. In 2007, he played the main character Henry Roth in Dedication.
Crudup worked with director Zack Snyder on the movie Watchmen. He played the superhero Doctor Manhattan. In 2011, he played Timothy Geithner in the TV movie Too Big to Fail. This movie was about the 2008 financial crisis. Crudup stars in the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show. He has won two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Critics' Choice Television Awards for this role.
Stage Performances
A year after finishing his studies at Tisch, Crudup made his first appearance on Broadway. This was in the play Arcadia by Tom Stoppard.
Crudup was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 2002. This was for his role as the main character in The Elephant Man on Broadway. He also received a nomination in 2005 for his role in The Pillowman. From 2006 to 2007, he was in The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard. He played the literary critic Vissarion Belinsky. For this role, he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2007.
In 2010, he starred in The Metal Children, an off-Broadway play. In 2011, Crudup received another Tony Award nomination for his role in the Broadway revival of Arcadia.
In 2013, he acted with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in two plays. These were No Man's Land and Waiting for Godot. These shows were performed in California and then moved to New York City. In 2017, he starred in the play Harry Clarke.
Other Work
From 1998 to 2005, Crudup was the voice for the "Priceless" TV ads for Mastercard. In these ads, he would list prices for things. Then he would say something like "priceless" for an experience. He said in 2005 that these ads helped him financially. This allowed him to choose the acting roles he really wanted.
Personal Life
Billy Crudup was in a relationship with actress Mary-Louise Parker from 1996 to 2003. They have a son named William Atticus Parker, who was born in January 2004. Crudup later dated actress Claire Danes from 2003 to 2006.
In 2017, Crudup started dating British actress Naomi Watts. They met while working on the Netflix show Gypsy. The couple got married in New York City in June 2023. In June 2024, Watts and Crudup had a second wedding ceremony with their family in Mexico.
