Black Chew Head is the highest point in Greater Manchester, England. It's like the top of a big hill! This spot is located in Saddleworth, which is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham.

It stands on moorland, which is a type of open, wild land. Black Chew Head is right on the edge of the famous Peak District national park. It reaches a height of 542 meters (about 1,778 feet) above sea level. This makes it the "county top" for Greater Manchester. It's also very close to the border with Derbyshire.

Historically, this area was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. But in 1974, things changed. A new area called Greater Manchester was created. This made Black Chew Head the highest point of this new county.

Exploring Black Chew Head

Black Chew Head is a part of a larger hill called Black Hill. Think of Black Hill as its "parent peak." This means Black Chew Head is connected to it. The hill looks over the beautiful Chew Valley. This valley leads towards Dovestones Reservoir to the east and north. It also overlooks the valley of Crowden Great Brook to the south.

How to Visit Black Chew Head

You can reach Black Chew Head in a few ways. The most popular way is from Dovestones Reservoir. This reservoir is near Greenfield. From there, you can follow an access road that leads to Chew Reservoir.

Other ways to get there include:

  • From Crowden in Derbyshire.
  • From the A635 to the north.

The famous long-distance walking path, the Pennine Way, passes very close to the summit. It runs just to the east as it goes from Crowden to Black Hill. In 2018, there was a big wildfire on Saddleworth Moor. Luckily, Black Chew Head was just outside the burned area.
