Black Dome Mountain is a cool, ancient volcano in British Columbia, Canada. It's the northernmost peak of the Camelsfoot Range, which is a mountain chain along the west side of the Fraser River. This mountain is like a giant, flat-topped hill called a butte, and it's part of a group of old volcanoes known as the Chilcotin Group.

Where is Black Dome Mountain?

Black Dome Mountain is found in a special spot where Churn Creek meets the Fraser Canyon. It's about 27 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Dog Creek Bridge in a place called Gang Ranch.

Surrounding Areas

This mountain is the most northern peak in the Camelsfoot Range. This range runs along the west side of the Fraser River, north of Lillooet. The Churn Creek Protected Area is right next to the mountain's north and west sides. The amazing Fraser Canyon stretches south along its eastern side.

What is Black Dome Mountain Made Of?

Like many other volcanoes in British Columbia, Black Dome Mountain is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This "Ring" is a huge area around the Pacific Ocean with over 160 active volcanoes!

Volcanic Rocks and Minerals

Around Black Dome Mountain, you can find special rocks like obsidian. Obsidian is a shiny, black volcanic glass. The volcano has also created olivine basalt dykes, which are like walls of hardened lava. It also has different types of lava and agglomerate, which is a mix of volcanic rocks.

How it Formed

Scientists believe Black Dome Mountain formed because the Earth's crust was stretching. This stretching happened behind the Cascadia subduction zone. The last time this volcano erupted was during a period called the Pliocene era.

A Bit of History

In the early 1950s, Black Dome Mountain became a place of excitement! People were looking for gold there. A company called Bralorne Mines Inc. explored the area, hoping to find valuable gold deposits.
