Braian Ezequiel Toledo (born September 8, 1993 – died February 26, 2020) was an amazing javelin thrower from Argentina. He was so good that he broke the world record for young athletes by throwing the javelin super far!

Braian won the very first javelin competition at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore. He also won gold medals at other big events. These included the 2010 South American Youth Championships and the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships.

In November 2016, Braian started training with coach Kari Ihalainen. In April 2017, he moved to Kuortane, Finland. His goal was to get even better for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Sadly, Braian Toledo died in a motorcycle accident on February 26, 2020. Many famous people, like soccer legend Diego Maradona, shared their sadness. The head of the Argentine Olympic Committee, Gerardo Werthein, also paid tribute to him.

Becoming a Javelin Star

Braian Toledo grew up in a small house in Marcos Paz, Argentina. He lived with his mom and two younger brothers. One day, an athletics coach named Gustavo Osorio visited Braian's school. He invited Braian to join his training group.

At first, Braian loved soccer, which is very popular in Argentina. But when he was twelve, he decided to focus only on track and field. This was a big change for him!

Early Successes

Braian won a bronze medal at the 2008 South American Youth Championships. He really started to get noticed at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Brixen, Italy. In a very close final, Braian was in seventh place. But then, in his fifth throw, he made a new personal best of 73.44 meters.

This amazing throw was enough to win him the bronze medal. He was competing against boys a year older than him. He was only 56 centimeters away from winning the gold!

After this, Braian's results got much better, very quickly. In July, he won a silver medal at the 2009 South American Junior Championships. Then, he won the gold medal at the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships. He threw the 800-gram javelin 69.84 meters. This was a new world record for a 15-year-old!

Later that year, he improved his personal best even more. He threw the youth javelin 79.25 meters in Córdoba. This was the best throw that year for any athlete born in 1993 or later.

Breaking World Records

On February 13, 2010, Braian broke his personal best by over five meters. He threw the javelin 84.85 meters in Buenos Aires. This throw easily beat the previous world youth record of 83.02 meters. That record was set by Russia's Valeriy Iordan.

Then, on March 6, 2010, in Mar del Plata, he made an even bigger record. He threw an incredible 89.34 meters on his first try! This was about 25 meters farther than his personal best just one year before.

Braian won the javelin event at the first-ever 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore. His winning throw was 81.78 meters. This was almost five meters ahead of the second-place athlete from the United States.

In September, he won the national youth title with a throw of 85.64 meters. This was his second-best throw ever. In October, he competed at the South American Youth Championships. He easily won, making the third-best throw ever for a young athlete.

Junior and Olympic Career

In late 2010, Braian started using the standard 800 g javelin. He broke the Argentine junior record with a 71.12-meter throw. He then broke his own record four more times at the 2010 Evita Games. His best mark there was 73.07 meters.

Argentine sports journalists gave him the Olimpia de Plata award. This award recognized him as the best Argentine in athletics that year. Even with all the attention, Braian and his coach focused on training. They kept improving, even with limited training facilities.

In his last year as a junior, Braian won a silver medal. This was at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Barcelona. He also won the javelin title at the 2012 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics. The next month, he set a new Argentine and South American junior record of 79.87 meters.

Braian made his Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games. He did not make it past the qualifying round there. However, he won the gold medal at the 2012 South American Under-23 Championships in Athletics. His throw set a new championship record.

He continued to compete at major events. He won gold at the 2017 South American Championships in Athletics. Braian also competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, finishing 10th.
