Brampton is a small village located in the Eden area of Cumbria, England. Cumbria is a county in the northwest of England. Before 1974, Brampton was part of a different county called Westmorland. The closest town to Brampton is Appleby-in-Westmorland.
What's in a Name?
The name 'Brampton' has a cool history! It was first written down in a document from 1208 as Branton. Later, in 1283, it appeared as Brampton. The name comes from an old English phrase, 'Brōm-tūn'. This means 'town' or 'settlement where broom plants grew'. So, Brampton was likely a place with lots of broom plants!
Where is Brampton?
Brampton is found about 2.41 kilometers (1.5 miles) northeast of Appleby-in-Westmorland. A small stream called Brampton Beck flows past the village to the east. This stream runs through a forest known as Brampton Gill. Just south-west of Brampton, about 360 meters away, is a tiny group of houses called Croft Ends. The village of Dufton is also nearby, about 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) to the east.
A Look Back in Time
Brampton has been around for a long time! On an old map from 1579 by Christopher Saxton, it was spelled 'Branton'. This same spelling showed up again on a 1670 map by Schenk and Valck. In 1794, John Cary's map marked it as 'Bramton'. The first time the village's current name, 'Brampton', appeared on a map was in 1831.
Historic Buildings
Brampton has some really old buildings. Brampton Hall and its barn are from the 1600s. They are considered Grade II listed buildings, which means they are important and protected. Other historic places include the New Inn, a public house built in 1730. Town-end farmhouse was built in 1736, and Midtown Farm in 1740. The nearby Brampton water mill and its stables were probably built in the late 1700s.
Brampton Tower
Not far from the village, near Croft Ends, you'll find Brampton Tower. This tower is an example of Gothic revival architecture. This style became very popular in the 1800s. Other buildings from this time include goods sheds and weighbridge offices, built in 1873. Around 1870, Brampton village had about 304 people living there. This information comes from a record called the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales.
