History of CLP Group
CLP Group was founded in Hong Kong in 1901. It was first called China Light & Power Company Syndicate. In 1903, the company opened its very first power station in Hung Hom. This station could produce 75 kilowatts of power.
By 1919, CLP was providing electricity for street lights in Kowloon. The Kadoorie family joined the company's board of directors in 1930. They still help manage the company today.
In 1983, CLP worked with Guangdong Nuclear Power. They built and operated the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant together. In 1998, CLP Holdings Limited became the new main company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
In 2018, CLP started a new part of its business called CLP Digital. This branch has its own company, Smart Energy Connect (SEC). SEC focuses on creating solutions that are good for the environment.
CLP Group Around the World
CLP Group has been expanding its business outside of Hong Kong. It has done this by buying or joining with other companies. CLP now operates in Australia (through EnergyAustralia), India, Mainland China, Southeast Asia (like Thailand and Indonesia), and Taiwan.
Starting in Mainland China
CLP's first step outside Hong Kong was into mainland China. In 1979, CLP began supplying power to the Chinese mainland electrical grid by connecting its Hong Kong power stations.
Growing Through Partnerships
In the 1990s, CLP started to grow by partnering with and buying other companies.
- In 1996, it teamed up with Taiwan Cement Corporation.
- In 1998, it bought a part of Thai Electricity Generating Public Co Ltd.
- In 2001, it acquired Australian Yallourn Energy.
- In 2005, it expanded in Australia by buying TXU Merchant Energy. This allowed CLP to sell electricity directly to homes and businesses.
- In 2002, CLP also bought an Indian company called Gujarat Paguthan Energy Corporation Private Limited.
Power Stations Around the World
CLP has many power stations across Asia. Most of these stations use coal or other fossil fuel power stations to make electricity. However, CLP also uses nuclear power, solar energy, and wind power.

In India, CLP has power stations like the Paguthan Combined Cycle Power Plant, which uses gas. It also has the Mahatma Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project in Jhajjar, Haryana, which started operating in 2012 and uses coal.
CLP also has several wind power sites in India. It has also started its first solar project, Veltoor, in Telangana.

EnergyAustralia is a company fully owned by CLP. It is one of Australia's biggest energy businesses. EnergyAustralia generates electricity from coal, gas, and renewable sources. It also sells electricity and gas to over 2.8 million homes and businesses in different Australian states.
From 2005 to 2011, CLP Group owned half of a company called Roaring 40s. This company operated wind farms in Australia, China, Hong Kong, and India.
Power Stations in Southeast Asia and Taiwan
CLP started its operations in Southeast Asia and Taiwan in the early 1990s. The company has built a strong collection of power projects in this region.
After selling its share in EGCO in Thailand in 2011, CLP's investments now include the Ho-Ping coal-fired project in Taiwan and the Lopburi solar farm in Thailand. CLP is also working on two new coal-fired projects in Vietnam.
