Calvert is a small rural town and area located in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It's known for its quiet, rural feel with lots of open land. In 2021, about 374 people lived in Calvert.

Exploring Calvert's Landscape

Calvert is a place with interesting natural features. The Main Line railway tracks run right through the town. A creek called Western Creek also flows through Calvert. This creek is a branch of the larger Bremer River.

Mountains and Farmland

In the northern parts of Calvert, the land rises to about 340 meters above sea level. This higher area is around a spot called Mount Grandchester No. 2. It's part of the Little Liverpool Range. The southern areas of Calvert are mostly flat and used for farming. This means you'll see lots of fields and open spaces there.

A Glimpse into Calvert's Past

Calvert has a long history, starting way back in the 1800s. It began as a stopping place for travelers.

Early Days and Name Changes

In 1843, an inn was opened in the area by someone named Owens. It was later sold to McKeon. In 1854, the area was officially surveyed and named the village of Alfred. It became an important stop for coaches traveling through the region. Much later, on March 9, 1931, the district's name was changed to Calvert.

The Railway Station's Story

When the Main Line railway was first built, Calvert didn't have its own station. But in 1865, local residents asked for one. Their request was granted, and in 1866, a station called Western Creek opened. This station was renamed Calvert in 1884.

The Old Schoolhouse

Alfred State School opened its doors on March 11, 1872. In 1910, its name was changed to Calvert State School. The school taught students for many years before closing in 1972. The old school building was located at 29-35 Newcastle Street (27°39′53″S 152°31′16″E / 27.6647°S 152.5212°E / -27.6647; 152.5212 (Calvert State School (former))).
