Cameron is a small town in Steuben County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 898 people lived there. The town is named after Dugald Cameron, who was an early settler and helped manage land. Cameron is located in the middle of Steuben County, west of the city of Corning.

Discovering Cameron's Past
The first people settled in the Cameron area around the year 1800. The town of Cameron was officially formed in 1822. It was created from a part of the Town of Addison. Later, some parts of Cameron were used to create new towns: Thurston in 1844 and Rathbone in 1856.
The Railroad's Journey Through Cameron
A very important event for Cameron was when the New York and Erie Railroad line opened in September 1850. This railroad helped connect Cameron to other places. In 1972, a big flood from Hurricane Agnes damaged the railway. It had to be completely rebuilt.
In 1905, Cameron had a population of 1,217 people.

- Bonny Hill – This area is in the northeast part of the town. It is northeast of North Cameron.

- Cameron – This is the main hamlet (a small village) of Cameron. It is where County Roads 10 and 119 meet, near the Canisteo River.
- Cameron Mills – Another hamlet located near the town line. It is in the southeast part of the town.
- North Cameron – This hamlet is close to the northern border of the town. It is on County Road 10A.
- South Cameron – A hamlet located southwest of the main Cameron hamlet. It is also on Jackson Hill Road.
- West Cameron – This hamlet is northwest of the main Cameron hamlet. It is located on Route 119.
A Famous Person from Cameron
- William W. Averell (1832–1900) was born in Cameron. He became an officer in the United States Army. He also invented asphalt pavement, which is used to make roads.
