Early Life and Gymnastics
Carmit Bachar was born in Los Angeles, California. Her father is from Israel, and her mother has Dutch, Indonesian, and Chinese roots. Both of her parents were dancers. Her mother was a dance teacher, and her father worked with famous performers like Elvis Presley.
Bachar was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, which are gaps in the upper lip and the roof of the mouth. She had to have surgeries as she grew up.
For 10 years, she was a talented rhythmic gymnast. She competed for the United States and placed 5th in the U.S. Olympic trials in 1992. While training, she also studied music and dance at a special arts high school.
Career in Music and Dance
The Pussycat Dolls
In 1995, Bachar joined the Pussycat Dolls, which started as a dance group. They performed weekly at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. The group became very popular and was featured in magazines and on MTV.
During this time, Bachar also worked as a backup dancer for major music stars. She appeared in many famous music videos, including Michael Jackson's "Blood on the Dance Floor" and Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love".
In 2003, music producers decided to turn the Pussycat Dolls into a singing group. The final lineup included Bachar, Nicole Scherzinger, Melody Thornton, Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt, and Jessica Sutta.
The group became a worldwide success. They released hit singles like "Don't Cha", "Buttons", and "Stickwitu". Their first album, PCD, sold millions of copies. In March 2008, Bachar left the group to focus on her own projects.
Solo Work and LadyStation
After leaving the Pussycat Dolls, Bachar began working on her own music. In 2011, she formed an electronic pop duo called LadyStation with DJ Sammy J. They released several singles, including "Body in Motion" and "Loud."
Bachar also released her own solo songs as an independent artist. Her first single, "It's Time," came out in 2017.
Pussycat Dolls Reunion
In 2019, the Pussycat Dolls announced they were getting back together. They released a new single called "React" in February 2020 and performed it live on TV.
The group planned a world tour, but it had to be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The reunion ended in 2021.
Personal Life and Charity Work
Bachar married Kevin Whitaker in 2008. They have one daughter, Keala Rose, who was born in 2011.
Bachar is passionate about helping others. Because she was born with a cleft palate, she wants to help children with the same condition. She is an ambassador for Operation Smile, a charity that provides free surgeries for children with facial deformities.
In 2007, she traveled to Bolivia with Operation Smile. She and her team set up fun activities like face painting, music, and dance for the children waiting for their surgery. She hopes to start her own charity called "Smile With Me" to inspire people and teach them that inner beauty is what matters most.
