Champlain is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. It is located on the western shore of Lake Champlain. The town is very close to the Canadian border.

In 2020, about 5,745 people lived here. Champlain is in the northeastern part of Clinton County. It is also in the northeastern part of New York State. The town includes two villages: Champlain and Rouses Point.

History of Champlain

Lake Champlain was very important in the past. It was a key route for military and trade during the colonial period. The lake and the town are named after Samuel de Champlain. He was the first person to explore this area in 1609.

Champlain was part of Canada until 1763. It became part of the United States in 1783. The town of Champlain was officially formed in 1788. This was the same year Clinton County was created.

Over the years, parts of Champlain were used to form other towns. In 1799, the town of Chateaugay was formed. Later, in 1804, the towns of Chazy and Mooers were also created from Champlain's land.

Border Crossings in Champlain

Champlain is right on the border with Canada. It has three important border crossings. These are Champlain, Overton Corners, and Rouses Point. The Champlain Port of Entry is on Interstate 87. It is one of the busiest commercial crossings on the northern border. This crossing connects New York City to the south with Montreal in Canada to the north.

Geography and Location

Champlain is about 43 miles (69 km) south of Montreal, Canada. The town covers a total area of 58.8 square miles (152.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. About 7.6 square miles (19.6 square kilometers) is water.

Lake Champlain is on the eastern side of the town. The Richelieu River also flows along the eastern edge. Champlain shares a border with Grand Isle County, Vermont. The northern border of the town is the international border with Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec, Canada.

Major Roads in Champlain

The Adirondack Northway (I-87) is a major highway. It starts at the Canadian border in Champlain. It goes south to Albany. This highway connects to the New York State Thruway.

Other important roads include US 9 and U.S. Route 11. US 9 runs parallel to I-87. U.S. Route 11 also runs north-south through the town. US 2 meets US-11 near Rouses Point. New York State Route 9B and New York State Route 276 are also in the area.

Notable People from Champlain

  • Jehudi Ashmun, who was born in Champlain. He was a religious leader. He helped promote the idea of Black people settling in Liberia.
