Jaguares Fútbol Club is a Mexican football team. They are based in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico. The team plays in the Segunda División de México. This is the third-highest level of Mexican football.
The club first started in 2002 as Jaguares de Chiapas Fútbol Club. Later, in 2013, its name changed to Chiapas Fútbol Club. This happened after the original team moved to Querétaro. Another team, San Luis F.C., then moved to Tuxtla Gutiérrez to become Chiapas FC. The club stopped playing in 2017 after moving down to a lower league. However, it was brought back in 2024 with its current name, Jaguares Fútbol Club.
Club History
The First Jaguares Team (2002–2013)
The first Jaguares team began on June 27, 2002. This happened when the Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz team was sold and moved to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Their first game was on August 3, 2002, against Tigres UANL. They lost 1–3 at home, but Lucio Filomeno scored their first goal ever.
The team got its first win on August 25, 2002, beating San Luis 1–0. In the Clausura 2005 season, the coach José Luis Trejo was replaced. Antonio Mohamed took over, but results were still not good. Then, Fernando Quirarte became manager, which helped the team play better.
Jaguares won the Chiapas Cup in 2004. They won it again on July 16, 2005, by defeating Necaxa. In 2006, under coach Eduardo de la Torre, the club had a great regular season. They made it to the Play-offs but lost in the Quarter-finals to Guadalajara.
On May 20, 2013, the club was sold. The new owners decided to move the team to Querétaro. They said this was because of low fan attendance and not enough sponsors in Chiapas.
Chiapas FC Era (2013–2017)
After the original Jaguares team moved, San Luis F.C. moved to Tuxtla Gutiérrez on May 28, 2013. This new team was named Chiapas Fútbol Club. This brought a top-division team back to Chiapas.
Chiapas F.C. played in the Primera División de México. However, at the end of the Clausura 2017 tournament, they were moved down to the Liga de Ascenso de México. This happened because they finished last in the relegation table.
On June 8, 2017, the team was officially closed down. A week later, the president of the Liga MX confirmed the team was no longer part of the league. There were plans for a new team in Chiapas to play in a lower league, but these plans did not work out at that time.
Jaguares FC Returns (2024–Present)
In 2024, there were talks about bringing the Jaguares team back to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. On May 30, 2024, it was announced that the Cimarrones de Sonora team was looking to move their franchise. However, this move did not happen, and Cimarrones stayed in Hermosillo.
Finally, on July 12, 2024, the Jaguares F.C. project was approved. The team started playing in the Liga Premier - Serie A. They took the spot that Cafetaleros de Chiapas had in the league.
