Ciro Ferrara (born 11 February 1967) is a famous Italian former footballer and manager. He played as a defender. Ciro Ferrara spent most of his playing career with two big Italian clubs: Napoli and Juventus. He won many important titles, including seven Serie A championships.
After he stopped playing, Ferrara became a football manager. His last job was coaching Wuhan Zall in China. He also coached Juventus and the Italy national under-21 team. He was an assistant coach for the Italian national team when they won the 2006 FIFA World Cup! For Italy, he played 49 games and represented his country in the 1988 Summer Olympics, two UEFA European Championships (in 1988 and 2000), and the 1990 World Cup.

Time at Napoli

Ciro Ferrara was born in Naples, Italy. He started playing football in the youth team of his hometown club, Napoli, in 1980. By 1984, he was playing for the main team. In his first full season, he played 14 games.
Ferrara quickly became a regular player for Napoli. He even got called up to play for the Italian national team for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He helped Napoli win the 1989 UEFA Cup final by scoring a goal. With Napoli, he won two Serie A titles (in 1986–87 and 1989–90). He also won the 1987 Coppa Italia and the 1990 Supercoppa Italiana.
Moving to Juventus
In 1994, Ferrara moved to Turin to play for Juventus. He quickly became a key player for the team. He played over 40 games in his first season there. Many people thought he was one of the best defenders of his time. He kept his starting spot for ten years!
Ferrara was even the team captain from 1995 to 1996. He won many more trophies with Juventus. This included six more Serie A championships, making a total of eight in his career. He also won the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Intercontinental Cup.
At Juventus, Ferrara was a very important part of the defense. He played alongside other great defenders like Mark Iuliano and Paolo Montero. Juventus had one of the best defenses in the world back then. It was very hard for other teams to score against them.
In his last season (2004–05), he played only a few games. Ciro Ferrara retired from football in May 2005 at the age of 38.

Assistant Coach for Italy
Ferrara was part of the coaching staff for the Italian national team. He helped them win the 2006 FIFA World Cup. After this big win, he joined Juventus' staff. He worked with the youth system, helping young players.
Coaching Juventus
In May 2009, Ferrara became the interim head coach for Juventus. He coached them for the last two weeks of the season. He helped the team win both games and finish second in the league. Because of this success, he was officially named manager for the 2009–10 season.
Juventus signed some new star players that summer. The team started well, winning their first four league games. However, things got tougher later in the season. Juventus did not make it past the group stage in the 2009–10 UEFA Champions League. They also had a losing streak in the league. In January 2010, Juventus lost to Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia. After this, Ferrara was replaced as coach.
Coaching Italy U21 and Sampdoria
In October 2010, Ferrara became the head coach of the Italy under-21 team. His former teammate Angelo Peruzzi was his assistant. Under Ferrara, the U21 team played very well and remained unbeaten in their qualifiers for the 2013 European Championship.
In July 2012, he left the U21 team to coach Sampdoria, a team that had just been promoted to Serie A. However, he was sacked in December 2012.
Personal Life
Ciro Ferrara cares about helping others. With his friend and former teammate Fabio Cannavaro, he started a charity foundation. This foundation is called Fondazione Cannavaro Ferrara. It helps hospitals in their hometown of Naples get equipment for cancer research. It also helps young people in Naples who are at risk.
